The Red Hot Chili Peppers, one of California’s most legendary exports, take to the stage at the Cape Town Stadium for a smoking concert on Tuesday, 5 February 2013, as part of their larger South African tour.
After three decades of non-stop hits and high-energy performances - the only thing that’s changed is the band members – the legendary rock ‘n roll bad boys of the 90s are destined for Mzansi soil. At the helm, even after all these years, is founding member, front man and iconic vocalist Anthony Kiedis; though, the fearless leader of the punk-funk-rock group would be little without his backing threesome: co-founder Michael "Flea" Balzary on bass, long-time drummer Chad Smith and youngster Josh Klinghoffer on guitar.
Since their inception in 1983, the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame inductees have recorded 10 studio albums, 78 live albums, 11 compilation albums, eight video albums, three EPs (extended plays), 46 singles and 44 music videos. Not to mention, there’s the seven Grammy Awards under their belt, and then there’s the fact that their albums “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” and “Californication” are ranked among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Propelled into the limelight by Kiedis’s unique vocal range and experimentation with singing styles, it’s likely that the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ continued success lies in their supreme songwriting ability. Since their ‘sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll’ days, the band’s lyrics have evolved to address more philosophical themes and to explore spirituality, mortality and the cons of fame and Hollywood.
Similarly, known for their antics on- and off-stage, RHCP’s storied attachment to killer performances doesn’t seem to be abating. A review by TheStarPhoenix.com of one of their shows in Canada last year confirms that the 50-year old rockers still take to the stage in acrobatic fashion and continue to wow with tricks and tumbles; reportedly, even Flea came onto the stage for the encore walking on his hands.
All in all, Cape Town fans can prepare themselves for an unforgettable evening; the night kicks off with an opening performance by local controversial rap-rave group, Die Antwoord. This zef counter culture band has been around since 2008, but it wasn’t until the re-release of ’Enter the Ninja‘ in 2010 that they started shocking audiences with their hard-hitting Afrikaans-Xhosa-English lyrics and catchy pop beats.
