Love or hate them, One Direction, known affectionately by fans as simply ‘1D’, is coming to the Cape Town Stadium to perform on Wednesday, 1 April 2015, and this is no April Fool’s joke. The Mother City concert, which follows on from a pair of performances in Johannesburg, is part of a three-show series that marks the group’s first ever foray onto South African stages.
Having released four albums since 2011, namely Up All Night, Take Me Home, Midnight Memories and Four, this four-man UK boy band (fifth member Zayn Malik left in early 2015) rocketed to fame after competing in the British TV series The X Factor in 2010. The group has not only been credited with sparking a revival in the interest of boy bands, they also have consistently topped charts in the US and taken Billboard’s top artist of the year trophy in 2014.
One Direction is best known for singles like ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, ‘Live While We’re Young’, ‘Story of My Life’ and ‘Steal My Girl’.
The supporting act for One Direction is South African artist Johnny Apple, who won the SA’s Got Talent TV competition in 2013.
