The idea of just ‘hanging out’ takes on a totally different meaning at the 2014 National Lead Rock Climbing Competition from Saturday, 4 to Sunday, 5 October 2014. Over the spring weekend, competitors from all over the country will come together at the CityROCK Climbing Gym in Observatory to show off their skills in the hope of taking top honours in their age group category.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE 2014 NATIONAL LEAD CLIMBING EVENT AT CITYROCK CLIMBING GYM
The competition aims to highlight the up-and-coming young talent from all over the country and give competing adolescents an experience that will better prepare them for international tournaments.
For those not in the know, lead climbing involves indoor climbing on manufactured walls and grips. These manmade grips come in a variety of sizes and shapes which may not be found outdoors. This encourages strength training and enhances climbing technique.
The athletic event has a variety of categories, ranging from U13 and U19 groups to Open Ladies’ and Mens’ sections, that climbers can compete in. Those wanting to compete in the Open events have to be over the age of 16 to qualify.
Spectators are welcome to join the festivities, and there will be cash food stalls and refreshments available for hungry and thirsty patrons.
ENTRY FEES & REGISTRATION FOR THE 2014 NATIONAL LEAD CLIMBING EVENT AT CITYROCK CLIMBING GYM
Registration opens in July 2014 and closes Friday, 19 September 2014. The competitors are expected to pay registration fees before Friday, 19 September. Entry fees cost R350p/p (for competitors only), and do note that no cash payments will be accepted on the day of the competition. Those participating in the National Lead Climbing Competition need to be at CityROCK Climbing Gym at 7:30am on Saturday, 4 October for briefing on the day.
Spectators interested in watching the action should note that the actual climbing takes place between 9am and 7:30pm on Saturday and between 9am and 3:15pm on Sunday.
