Dawn usually signifies the start of a working day; maybe dealing with traffic and another monotonous 9 to 5. For photographer David Lurie, it was the time of day when he would go out and document the dynamics of modern life in the Cape. He has curated his images into an extensive photographic exhibition titled ‘Morning After Dark’, which is currently on display at the University Museum in Stellenbosch, in association with Sulger-Buell Lovell, until Saturday, 31 October 2015.
David Lurie is a self-taught photographer who began documenting society in 1990. The images in the exhibition form part of a larger book that looks at urbanisation and the marginalised people of Cape Town today.
“This journey was an intensely personal experience, making observations about what I saw, a photographic diary of sorts, where non-linear and disparate images and symbols of startling modernity are linked to other stories and experiences of increasing chaos, dislocation and displacement in an ever-evolving, bewildering co-existence,” says Lurie.
“The moments I have chosen to isolate, when the protagonists of the photographs are absent, was deliberate and something of a departure for me; while recording what is seen, what is shown invokes what or who is not shown. They are the centre of this narrative. The true subjects of the photographs are, in this sense, invisible, yet contained within the photographs,” he continues.
So if you’re in the Winelands and fancy doing something a bit different and educational, go check out this thought-provoking exhibition by a talented local photographer.
