As a little pre-weekend treat, Durbanville Hills have decided to celebrate the Japanese staple with a sushi course on Thursday, 27 July 2017. You’ll be transported to another world by learning to expertly craft one of the national dishes of Japan.
Durbanville Hills is hosting a series of cookery workshops, and the sushi class is the second in their 2017 programme. You’ll be shepherded through the cuisine by The Little Pink Chef, Maryke Josling. Maryke has travelled the world spreading her expertise and love for cooking. She runs classes on global cuisines, including South African, Italian, Spanish, Thai, Mexican and more. You will certainly learn a lot from this foodie female when she tackles one of the most complex national dishes of Japan.

The legend says that to become a sushi chef, apprentices have to dedicate nearly ten years of their lives (some courses take 20 years to complete). They are given their first task to manage after five years, and it is only the preparation of the sushi rice. Don’t worry, you will only have to dedicate one evening to the delicious dish, and you’ll go home knowing how to make some tasty morsels for friends and family.
The course will take you through the entire process, from sushi rice to how to properly cut a fish. The ever popular sushi varieties include Sashimi (raw fish slices), Nigiri (rice topped with fish or prawn), California Rolls (fish and avocado encased in nori and rice), and Hand Rolls (a cone of seaweed filled with rice, fish and usually avocado). Unfortunately, we do not know specifically which types of sushi you will be preparing, but we do know that you’ll leave more versed in the preparation of this globally loved meal!

The event is being hosted at one of the best wine farms in Durbanville, and so with this course you will also get some vital insight on how to perfectly pair the fish dishes with a lovely glass of wine. Take your dinner party game to a whole new level this July.
BOOKINGS FOR THE 2017 SUSHI COURSE AT DURBANVILLE HILLS WINE ESTATE
The cost of this experience is R495p/p and can be booked by sending an email to skoen@durbanvillehills.co.za or giving the organisers a call on +27 (0)21 558 1300.
