For some people, an instrument becomes more than just an instrument. Such is the case with Joshua Bell, a man who makes the violin become a living breathing organism with a soul. As one of the world’s foremost violinists, Bell is known as a classical music superstar, and will be gracing our shores to play alongside the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra on Wednesday, 26, and Thursday, 27 August 2015 at the City Hall.
One of a series of upcoming concerts in Cape Town, the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto performance at the City Hall promises to be a classy, cultural affair, which will undoubtedly delight classical music fans of all ages. The conductor for the night will be Berhard Gueller, Symphony Nova Scotia’s music director and the principal guest conductor of the Victoria Symphony. The real star of the show, however, will be the inimitable Bell, who has a CV that’s almost as impressive as his ability with the bow.
The first person to be named the Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields since 1958, Bell has wowed audiences around the world and has recorded over 40 CDs since turning 18. Having received multiple awards and Grammy nominations for his efforts, including the Paul Newman Award from Arts Horizons and the Huberman Award from Moment Magazine, he was also named Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year and recognised as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. His parents gave him his first violin at age four and by age 12, his relationship with the instrument was serious and his talent was evident.
Clear your classical calendar and get ready to be blown away by the beauty of Tchaikovsky and Bell’s phenomenal skill.
