ijusi Design Based in African Experience Exhibit at UCT Hiddingh Campus

This World Design Capital 2014 project takes a look at the visual language of Mzansi

Get an eyeful of 20 years worth of lekker local visual designs at the ijusi – Design Based in African Experience exhibit, a showcase of South Africa’s only experimental graphics magazine’s quest to find out “What makes me African, and what does that ‘look’ like.” The installation comprises works by Mzansi’s leading artists and photographers, world-renowned graphic designers and unknown local creators, and all the pieces will be on display at the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis Galleries (Hiddingh Campus) from Thursday, 26 June to Wednesday, 23 July 2014.

Founded in 1995 by designer and publisher Garth Walker, ijusi (the name means ‘juice’ in isiZulu)is a Durban-based non-commercial magazine that aims to promote a visual design culture based on the South African experience, and despite the fact that it’snever actually been for sale, the publication has garnered an almost cult following from enthusiasts worldwide. The exhibition, which is a World Design Capital 2014 official project, draws on all 29 issues of ijusi for a display that highlights the traditions and heritage of the country and how the visual aesthetic has developed over the past two decades as South Africa has found its democratic feet.

Contributors include the likes of award-winning author Lauren Beukes, graphic designer Sne Mtetwa, legendary comic artists Mark and Anton Kannemeyer and Garth Walker himself, and visitors can expect to see a range of mediums and contexts, from graphic design, illustration and typography to writing and photography.  All in all, audiences should look forward to a fascinating timeline of South African design and a spectacular feast for the eyes.
