Julep Cocktail and Tapas Bar |
Way back in the Roaring Twenties, when alcohol was as taboo as wearing socks and sandals is today, folks used to go break the rules in secret at hideaways called speakeasies, where the booze would flow and the good times would roll. For those looking to reignite the flames of this bygone era, there’s a little known haunt in an alleyway just off Long Street where they can start (or end) an evening with some of the best cocktails this side of the Boerewors Curtain. And every Wednesday to Sunday Julep Bar, one of Cape Town’s best kept secrets, is offering up the delicious drinks at 25% off for partiers on a Depression-era budget from 9pm to 11pm.
Not one to follow the rules, the watering hole has a late-night happy hour for folks looking for a sneaky weekday jol or a laidback place to pre-game on Fridays and Saturdays that also happens to be a stumble away from one of the liveliest lanes in town. Walking into the low-lit, deep-coloured intimate room of a bar is like walking into a pimped-out house party or an ultra-cool VIP lounge, and this is where regulars go to get the party buzz that they get from being on the Long Street without actually being a part of the flow of the Mother City’s main vein.
Mainly, those in the know frequent Julep because the bar is one of the few places in town that takes its cocktail making rather seriously – only high quality ingredients are used and the bar staff is extra passionate about the mixing process. The happy hour offering allows thirsty night owls to sip on classic, glamour-era beverages, like refreshing mojitos, good old fashioned old-fashioneds and of course, top notch mint juleps, without having to break the bank. It’s up to you whether you stay for just one or work your way through the impressive menu in one sitting, but the truth is that once you discover this hidden gem, you’ll find yourself visiting regularly for both the colourful concoctions and the vibrant vibes.
