Hot off the success of Tiger Bay the Musical, Cape Town Opera are back with their next oeuvre; Grace Notes. The third performance will be held at St John's Church in Wynberg on Thursday, 27 July 2017. This celebration of sacred music from Europe and Africa will show at St John’s Church for everyone’s enjoyment. Be sure not to miss the unique and moving homage to the music of yesteryear.
Grace Notes will move its audience with historical music that evokes a range of emotions and feelings. The creators of Grace Notes have decided to include music from both Europe and Africa, as a way to combine these two continents histories. Their collective existences are interwoven like a tapestry, and the music that has been chosen to represent that does so incredibly well. There are few experiences that will move you as much as choral singing in a sacred venue. Have a listen to what you can expect from this show:
Grace Notes premiered in France and is now traveling to Cape Town for the very first time. The show’s musical director and conductor is Thuthuka Sibisi. This man is a musical genius if ever there was one; he has gone from strength to strength in his career. He started at Stellenbosch University and graduated in 2011, where he then moved onto the Drakensberg Boy’s Choir School. He has graced stages across the world including Japan, Argentina and Japan. He has even worked with William Kentridge, the famous South African artist. He was recently voted one of the Mail and Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans for 2017, which is no easy feat! He was listed among other sensational South Africans including the ever-impressive Lira, Trevor Noah, DJ Euphonik and many more. Making this list is a recognition of Sibisi’s talent, and it tells the world to keep their eyes on this rising star. He is currently studying Performance and Directing at Goldsmiths University of London. Witness the work of Sibisi at any of the three performances of Grace Notes this July. Don’t miss your opportunity to see a globally recognised musical genius.

Thuthuka Sibisi had this to say about Grace Notes - “Thanks to the support and encouragement of Cape Town Opera, I went on an adventure of musical discovery. Most of pieces in Grace Notes are those that thrill and fascinate me, and I wanted to share these with a wider audience who may not necessarily have access to them.”
The first venue is a Cape Town icon; St George’s Cathedral. It was known during Apartheid times as the ‘People’s Cathedral’ for its role in the resistance. The original structure was built in 1834, and is the oldest Cathedral in Southern Africa. It started as a church, and was remodelled by Herbert Baker in the late 19th century. The evocative voices of the choir in Grace Notes will echo beautifully in the Cathedral, and this kind of musical event does not come around everyday. The second venue for Grace Notes is St John's Church in Wynberg. In 2014, the church celebrated its 180th anniversary, making it one of the oldest churches in Cape Town.
