Elim Wine Festival

This quaint wine region goes all-out with a family-friendly festival that’s worth the trip

South Africa’s youngest and most southern wine growing region invites locals and tourists alike to raise a glass to cool climate vintages at the Elim Wine Festival on Saturday, 5 November 2016. This year, the annual festival will take place at the Black Oystercatcher Wine Farm, with a line-up that duly celebrates the area’s vino and pays homage to the start of summer.

Guests can expect to sip and swirl intensely fruity wines from the region’s resident farms, or tuck into hearty country fare while soaking up the live music. There will also be a range of quirky local activities on the bill. As the stretch of coastal plain that sprawls out from the quaint missionary village of Elim to the rolling hills of Bredasdorp is known for its gracious hospitality, festival-goers can expect a warm and hearty welcome.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2016 ELIM WINE FESTIVAL

ONE-OF-A-KIND WINE TASTINGS: The small group of determined wineries that make up the Elim Wine Route have won hard-earned respect for their ability to negotiate the windswept area’s environmental extremes and produce exquisite cool climate wines, like Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. The yearly celebration provides ample opportunity to come face-to-face with the fruits of the winemakers’ labour. Ten of the region’s wine farms and two breweries, Fraser’s Folly and Cederberg Brewery, will be on hand to dole out tasters and wow samplers with award-winning whites, reds and craft beers. This year, some of the winemakers are offering tutored tastings for a more intimate experience.

COUNTRY FARE AND FYNBOS: Aside from its cellar masters’ resolve, Elim is also known for its exquisite flowers and country-style cooking – both of which will be on show at the local produce market for the duration of the festival. From beautiful fynbos bouquets to home-made lemonade and farm-style meat and cheese platters, there will be plenty of pretty and tasty treats to tempt you.

LIVE MUSIC AND LEKKER LOCAL ACTIVITIES: Afrikaans musician Nic Stevens will take to the stage to put on a one-man acoustic concert, but attendees can also catch a host of slightly odd Elim-esque activities as well. There’s a horseback archery performance, a savvy sheep dog display, as well as a vintage tractor parade for the classical motor enthusiasts.
