Progress is a groundbreaking documentary about a small-town team who caused one of the biggest upsets in South African rugby history that will be shown on Wednesday 7 March at the Hubspace in Woodstock.
Progress reveals a side of South African society that has rarely been documented: the hidden world of the ordinary sportsman, his modest dreams and largely unheralded triumphs, his acute disappointments, all played out on dusty fields, light years from the fame and fortune of professional rugby.
The Underdog
The film is a very personal account of a season in the life of burly prop forward Zama Takayi and a group of his team-mates, as they come to terms with having caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of South African rugby – victory over the University of Stellenbosch’s famed Maties at the 2006 National Club Championships in Stellenbosch.
Maties, steeped in tradition, have produced more Springbok rugby players than any other club. In recent years, they have won the Varsity Cup three times in a row. The Progress team, on the other hand, comprised mainly factory workers, students and unemployed young men from the township of Rosedale, just outside of Uitenhage. Before the tournament, few people outside the Eastern Cape had ever heard of them…
Best of all is that the screening of this uniquely South African documentary is absolutely free.
