Celebrate the season at one of the oldest most charming hotels in the Western Cape

Venture into olive country for your 2013 Christmas lunch and enjoy a truly special festive meal at the Royal Hotel’s restaurant in Riebeek Kasteel, which is just an hour from Cape Town and boasts Mediterranean surroundings ideal for a summer South African Yuletide afternoon.

The colonial classic’s Head Chef Francois du Toit has certainly outdone himself, putting together a modern Christmas menu with traditional twists that’s sure to satisfy even the stuffiest of turkeys. The five-course offering starts out with perfect, little Prawn and Crayfish Croquettes served with a Spicy Curried Tartar Sauce, which are followed by a fresh Smoked Salmon Carpaccio with Slow-roasted Tomato, Cranberries, Orange Segments and Coriander  and drizzled with a Soy and Lemon dressing.

Things get even more drool-inducing from there.  Next on the merry menu is a Sous-vide Turkey Ballotine wrapped in Serrano Ham and dished up alongside an indulgent Thyme and Truffle Cream, Crushed Macadamia Nuts and Butternut and Feta Couscous. After that, diners can tuck into a juicy, more-ish Sage Butter-fried Pork Loin with Maple and Mustard Jus and Parmesan Polenta.

Be sure to save room for dessert. Eggnog Crème Brûlée with Fruitcake Melba Toast and Vanilla Pod and Hazelnut Ice Cream  rounds off the meal on a sweet note likely to linger long after the last spoon has been licked clean.       

Little elves dining at The Royal Restaurant can order their Christmas meal from a kiddie’s a la carte menu, and those with special dietary needs, like vegetarians and pescatarians, should call ahead so adjustments can be made accordingly.
