Blueprint Dance Show at the Cape Town City Hall

A thought-provoking production that explores the link between the human form and its urban surroundings

Innovative theatre company Darkroom Contemporary presents its latest dance production, Blueprint, at the iconic Cape Town City Hall from Monday, 28 July until Saturday, 2 August 2014. This original work reconsiders the link between movement and design in modern society and is one of only two dance projects to be recognised as part of the official World Design Capital 2014 events programme.

The inspired show meshes together architectural considerations with movement, sound, set and lighting design, and in so doing, it offers audiences a fresh way to perceive the human body and our urban surroundings.

“Using architecture as a starting point, the choreography was shaped to show the similarities between the human body and the built environment,” explains Oscar O’Ryan, project manager and co-founder of Darkroom Contemporary. “Structure, shape, balance, texture, pattern and rhythm are present in almost every designed object, but also very much in the human body and its movements.”

By exploring the human form within the context of a constructed environment, Blueprint asks questions about our role within the concrete world and also looks at the impact that urban and technological developments have on personal interactions.

Aside from tackling a very unique topic, the production is also highly interactive and is spread across four rooms in the City Hall, so that viewers have to move around to watch the different scenes..

“The audience gets to view the action up close and from any angle, rather than watching it on a theatre stage,” says Oscar. “Theatre-goers also get a blueprint map of the four spaces, so that the scenes may be watched in a different sequence by different people.”

The piece is the result of collaboration between the Cape Town-based Darkroom Contemporary company and a number of Mother City creatives. The show was choreographed by artistic director Louise Coetzer and features music by renowned electronic music producer and DJ Ebenhaezer Smal (better known by his stage name HAEZER), sculptural installations by visual artist and animator Imraan Samo, laser installations by Fabian Humphry and data visualisation by Clear Data Viz, making it a multi-faceted and fully immersive piece of theatre.
