Ladies, hold onto your panties, world-renowned saxophonist Andrew Young returns to Cape Town on Friday, 9 November 2012 to perform his newest show at District Six’s Fugard Theatre. Fresh from a sold-out European tour and a handful of performances in KwaZulu-Natal, the Fabio doppelganger looks to wow audiences with his ‘At the Movies’ act, homage to the golden cannon of classic cinema.
Through music, film, pictures and anecdotes, Andrew and his trusty backing band will breathe fresh life into the signature songs of movies of past. Fans can look forward to a nostalgic journey that includes renditions of ‘Moon River’ from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, ‘Fallen’ from “Pretty Woman”, the “Men in Black” theme song and many more.
Hailed as the ‘Prince of the Saxophone’ in Beijing and credited with enthralling performances from the Far East to the Caribbean, Andrew is a superb musician who’s earned rave reviews from publications both near and far.
Though British-born, he has a strong connection to South Africa; he played with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1989 to 1996. Similarly, he had he privilege of sharing the stage with national icons like Joseph Shabalala (Ladysmith Black Mambazo), Jonathan Butler, Shakatak and Shirley Bassey, and he mesmerized Capetonians with his tribute to the music of The Beatles, ‘I’m from Liverpool’ in 2011.
Needless to say, ‘At the Movies’ looks to make for an entertaining evening in one of the most charming city centre theatres in Cape Town.
The show starts at 8pm, ends at 10:30pm and includes a 20-minute intermission.
