It’s no secret that Capetonians love being active. If not all then a good portion of the population of the Mother City spend their weekend mornings riding bikes, climbing mountains or dog walking. On Saturday, 14 January 2017, A New Step is encouraging all of Cape Town’s residents to come out to Dolphin Beach in Blouberg and support their very worthy cause.
A New Step Fun Run/Walk is a 5-km race that is suitable for all ages and all fitness levels. The race hopes to raise money for a set of prosthetic legs. While the charity is currently only raising money for one very worthy individual, their ultimate goal is to be able to fund and provide prosthetics for children from underprivileged areas. The name of the recipient can be found on their website (Anewstep.co.za) along with his story, and a touching glimpse into life without legs.
We cannot emphasise enough that being able to walk is something that we take for granted every day. Some people, through no fault of their own, are unable to stand up on their own two feet and move on with their daily to-dos. The recipient of these prosthetic legs couldn’t be a more deserving person, and every little bit you donate will bring him closer to a new pair of prosthetic legs. If you cannot make the event, you can donate to the cause online via their website. Raising awareness about the lack of access to prosthetic limbs is a topic that deserves national recognition, and this event is just step one.
The race itself is a very relaxed 5-km run/walk that the whole family will enjoy. The race will start at 8am on Dolphin Beach and closes at midday. Be aware of the weather, please wear plenty of sun cream and bring a hat to protect yourself from the heat! Think of it this way, the faster you run, the less time you are out in the sun.
