Hide your girlfriend, your mother, your sister and your wife, multi-platinum singer-songwriter Chris Brown is destined for South African shores in December 2012 to play live in concert in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
After mesmerizing audiences with performances in the eastern part of the nation, the rapper and recording artist will take to the stage of the Mother City’s GrandWest for two separate shows: one on Wednesday, 19 December 2012 and one on Thursday, 20 December 2012.
As well known for a 2009 felony plea that stemmed from an altercation with then-girlfriend mega-star Rihanna (will she come and do a concert in Cape Town South Africa) – he’s still serving his five-year probation – as he is for his wildly successful run as a talented artist, Brown is, quite literally, seizing the day (his tour is called ‘Carpe Diem’) and travelling the world to re-assert his excellence as an R&B vocalist and performing artist.
Emerging from the small town of Tappahannock, Virginia at the young age of 16, Brown was initially compared to icons like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. His self-titled debut album, which was released in 2005, was certified as double-platinum, included two top 10 singles (‘Yo (excuse me miss)’ and ‘Gimme That’) and earned him two Grammy nominations (‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best R&B Contemporary Album’).
Nearly overnight he became a teen sensation, but upon the release of his sophomore album, ‘Exclusive’, in 2007, he cemented his status as one of America’s top male artists. The award nominations rained down, many of his singles (‘With You’, ‘Forever’ and ‘Kiss Kiss’) reached smash hit status and he was granted the utmost respect from the music community.
His hard-earned grand acclaim proved fleeting, however. He, quite unceremoniously, fell from grace in early 2009 when he turned himself in for beating Rihanna. Radio stations pulled his music off air, nations refused him entry and his image was marred and tarnished by his terrible, and much publicised, behaviour.
That said, since 2009 Brown has continued to produce and perform music (he’s released three albums in the time), and these days, he’s slowly winning audiences over once more. His 2011 release, ‘Fame’, won him three Grammy awards and saw him collaborating with noteworthy musicians, such as Justin Bieber, Busta Rhymes, Lil’ Wayne and more.
So despite despicable past actions, the smooth-singing vocalist will, no doubt, put on two powerful performances in Cape Town.
