On Thursday, 3 November 2016 the international photographic exhibition 1%: Privilege in a Time of Global Inequality makes its debut in South Africa at the Chavonnes Battery Museum. This exhibit sees a collection of photographs depicting global wealth and privilege, as experienced by one percent of the population.
“This exhibition brings 40 images by the world’s leading photographers to our shores. It affords the opportunity to highlight this topic as South Africa remains one of the most unequal societies in the world” says Heidi Erdmann, Cape Town exhibition curator.
Myles Little curated the exhibit, gathering images that perfectly illustrate the dichotomy between opulent wealth, and the rest of society that surrounds them. Little was conscious of, and deliberately avoided, opulent stereotypes pertaining to wealth and moves instead to focus on the privilege that is seen in everyday aspects like healthcare, education and leisure.
