Curry restaurants in Cape Town that locals love

The results are in: here are your favourite curry spots in Cape Town

Nobody knows Cape Town better than you, our readers. We took to social media to ask you where to find the best curry, and the results are in. Over 500 locals weighed in, and we’ve gone through the data to compile the definitive guide to Cape Town's best curries, according to Capetonians. From Athlone to Zonnebloem and everywhere in between, here are 11 personal recommendations for the best curry in town.

WHEN THE CURRY IS WORTH THE DISTANCE
For Hout Bay resident Camilla Wilson, her favourite spot is “the Curry Club! Hands down, without a doubt.'' The curry is so delicious Wilson said she would drive there all the way from Hout Bay because “it’s so damn good”. Cherise Nortjie agrees and suggests you try the Paneer Meneer Butter Masala or the veg biryani, which she describes as “food for the soul”.

YOU WON’T FIND A BETTER LAMB BUNNY CHOW
The Burner restaurant in Bellville specializes in authentic South Indian Cuisine and is fully operational for takeaways. “This is proper Indian cuisine,” writes Lauren Blaire Erendsen, “so flavourful, spicy and worth every penny”. Duane Nicol also thinks The Burner is a winner and has “yet to find a better curry of lamb bunny in Cape Town”.

THE CHEF IS AWARD-WINNING
Sharon Naidoo writes that at “Sundoo, you will find the best fine Durban curry as well as the bunny chow”. Wardia Mohamed says chef and owner Seelan Sundoo “whips up sublime morsels of Indian delights on the fly...and he’s won several awards!”.

CURRIES THAT ARE “FAN-BLERRIE-TASTIC”
According to Holly Gilbert-Jones, the food at the Indian Oven is not just good, it’s “fan-blerrie-tastic”. Their famous lamb rogan josh, chicken tikka masala or palak paneer are all prepared in a traditional style with an authentic clay tandoori oven. So, it’s no surprise that “the Indian Oven in Hout Bay is an absolute gem” writes Anton Kooi. “If you ask anyone in Hout Bay where to get the best Indian food”, he claims “they are always the answer”.

A FIRM FAMILY FAVOURITE
“The Indian Chapter in Tableview is tops,” says Suletta Du Plessis, writing that she’s “never had a bad meal there” and that it’s “a firm family favourite”. Restaurant owner Prim Reddy “is a Durban girl and makes curry as it should be done,” writes Craig Lewthwaite, who describes her curries as “ deliciously spicy”. Next time you feel like a proper curry for dinner try out their chicken tikka or the lamb jalfrezi.

THE FOOD IS TO DIE FOR
Susanne Eck is “still dreaming of that butter chicken” she describes as “absolutely delicious” from Vintage India in Gardens. Tayo Agagu insists that the “chicken lollipops and garlic naan bread are must-have add-ons to your order” and Maria Ross agrees that “the naan bread is to die for”.

SO MANY LAYERS OF FLAVOUR
“The best curry is Ninety-One in Seapoint Main Road,” writes Kerryn Moulang. “They are Stupendous.”  Her favourite dishes are the chicken tikka masala and the lamb korma. Moulang says it’s all in the sauce. “The sauces aren’t flat,” she told us. “There are so many layers of flavour. It’s something I can’t copy at home.”

HOME-MADE AUTHENTIC GOODNESS
If you’re looking for a top-notch prawn curry Genna Basha recommends Wella Spicy in town, writing that it’s “the best prawn curry I have tasted in ages”. Mary-Ann Grove is also a devout Wella Spicy fan and says that “it is literally world-class. It really is no ordinary curry. The flavours are spectacular. Each one of the curries is one of a kind”. If you’d like to try something different, add in their sourdough naan bread to your next order.

NESTLED BETWEEN A PHARMACY AND A POST-OFFICE
Tucked in between two unlikely places you will find Cape Town’s best hidden secret, Ragamuffin curry in Kenilworth. One of their biggest fans, Eleanor Muller, claims that it’s not just the delicious food but “it’s the holistic experience that makes the difference. The food is great, the vibe is mellow and the people are heart-felt”.
