It’s in one of South Africa’s oldest barns, and explores local flavours
Chef Bertus Basson’s latest restaurant opened its doors in March 2022, in Stellenbosch. It’s on Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate and expands on some of South Africa’s favourite flavours – and you can enjoy them in one of the oldest barns in the country.

Think farm-style food with a fresh, modern twist. All the dishes are inspired by South African favourites and are made with local, seasonal produce. For instance, locals were heartbroken about their beloved fish pastes being taken off the shelves, so in remembrance of this iconic favourite, Clara’s Barn brings you homemade fish paste served on toast.

Then there’s also quail, liver parfait and African grains, as well as a pavlova trolley of fresh pineapple, almond and coconut. Or a beetroot dish made with a variety of Mason beetroot, “stolslaai”, smoked, cured, dried and pickled with amasi or raw Cape bream with its own consommé, smoked tomato, cucumber, bokkom, jalapeño, dune spinach, and basil. Prepare to be wowed.

One of South Africa’s oldest barns is now home to this new restaurant that serves a 3- and 5-course menu. That doesn’t mean it isn’t modern – Clara’s Barn showcases modern decor with a clean, white interior, minimalistic furniture, and a black and brown colour scheme. There’s also a function room that can accommodate up to 80 people. Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate is also home to Bertus Basson’s other popular restaurant, Geuwels.
