Why you Should Take the My CiTi Airport Shuttle
Cape Town's transport goes fast, regular and inexpensive
You arrive at the airport and, having crossed two time zones in what feels like as many hours, you don't really know who or where you are. The taxi driver detects that you're not from these parts and promptly adds a couple of hundred Rand to your fare and you get stuck in heavy traffic on Cape Town's hottest day of the year. You see a bus full of comfortable passengers whizzing past in a dedicated bus lane on the highway. To add insult to injury, they paid a fraction of what you paid for your taxi.
Not many people know of the My CiTi airport shuttle and they should. At a better price-point than a R200-R300 taxi fare or shouldering a hefty car rental bill the service has a dedicated bus lane on the highway which means your journey could last as little as 30 minutes. It's comfortable, safe and runs at regular 20 minute intervals.
Councillor Elizabeth Thompson, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Major Projects, says: “We want people to feel proud to live in a world-class city with modern facilities. MYCiTi will give citizens a sense of control, ownership, greater choice, mobility and access to opportunities.”
The Route:
The service runs between directly outside the terminal at Cape Town International Airport and the Civic Centre station on Hertzog Boulevard in central Cape Town. The Civic Centre station is within easy walking distance of Cape Town's main train station and, although there is no parking, metered taxi services range from R19 (shared ride) to R130 (Camps Bay).
Prices:
Tickets are on sale at the ticket kiosks in both the Civic Centre and airport bus stations and cost only R50 one-way per adult and R25 one-way per child.
Times:
The shuttle runs every 20 minutes between 04:00 and 21:00 from the Civic Centre and between 05:00 and 22:00 from Cape Town International Airport.
“It’s fantastic – reminds me of the buses overseas. I won’t use any other transport from the airport from now on,” says Nyakwezi Katuliiba, a junior architect.
