Insights from the mind behind Cape Town's legendary wedding DJs
Cape Town featured on Wallpaper* cover
Popular design magazine boasts picture perfect view of Cape Town Stadium
Wallpaper* magazine, a popular UK-based publication and one of the foremost design publications in the world, has selected Cape Town to represent South Africa on the cover of the November 2010 issue – another positive outcome of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
The November edition of Wallpaper* magazine spotlights ten countries – Australia, China, Germany, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, Switzerland, USA and South Africa – and highlights the ‘Top Twenty’ reasons why each of these destinations are design hubs. The edition also features a series of ten covers, one for each of the countries chosen.
The South Africa cover boasts a picture perfect view of the Cape Town Stadium, and features the Designing South Africa project, alongside the best SA has to offer in design and architecture. Designing South Africa has spent the past year detailing everything built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and examining the benefits of the games for both South Africa, and the entire global design community. South Africa’s cover model is wearing fashion by Cape Town menswear designer, Stiaan Louw.
To many, Cape Town is seen as the hub of creativity in South Africa, with many major design events taking place in the city each year, including the Design Indaba and the Loeries Advertising Awards. Cape Town’s next major creative contribution will be in the form of a bid to be named World Design Capital 2014. This bi-annual honour is awarded to cities that are dedicated to using design for social, economic and cultural development; and the winning city is given global prominence during a year-long programme of design-led events.
‘Live Design. Transform Life’
Cape Town Partnership has been mandated by the City of Cape Town to coordinate Cape Town’s bid, with Cape Town Tourism and many public, private and media enterprises already showing their support of the initiative. The bid process will be used to showcase City-wide design and design-led events, to school the public on the impact design can have on a city’s economic and social development, and to express how critical design education is in the creation of future strategic-thinkers and innovators.
Mariette du-Toit Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, says, “World Design Capital 2014 is an excellent platform for us to showcase what Cape Town has to offer. The theme - ‘Live Design. Transform Life’ – is fitting for the nature of the Awards as well as for our city, which, like many South African cities, was built to divide and is now in the process of reinvention and integration. Cape Town’s bid to be World Design Capital 2014 gives us an opportunity to show the world that we have made tremendous progress on multiple levels, and that we are using design to shape our city into one of the top 10 cities in the world to live, visit, study, work and invest. Cape Town’s presence on the cover of the latest issue of Wallpaper* proves that we are a global contender.”
