Century City Conference Centre and Hotel in Cape Town

With world-class accommodation and function facilities, this new contemporary space is set to break travelling boundaries and transcend convention

Approximately 12kms from Cape Town, situated along 8kms of navigable waterways and canals, sits Century City – a privately managed mixed-use development space comprising office, retail, residential and leisure components in an urban environment. Fitting rather seamlessly into this ever-growing hub with its easy elegance is the Century City Conference Centre (CCCC) and Hotel, which officially launched in early 2016.

Although the CCCC and Hotel officially opened its conference venue in January 2016 and its hotel in February 2016, the world-class institution will finally be complete in July 2016 with the opening of its new walk-in wine cellar (more on that later). Independently owned by the Rabie Property Group and managed by joint CEOs Gary Koetser and Glyn Taylor, the hotel and function venue offers a flexible and personalised service coupled with world-class facilities designed to enable everything from a corporate to a laidback environment. In fact, according to hotel general manager Walda Meyer, the space is the newest hotel in the Mother City and is the ultimate destination for the ‘bleisure’ (business meets leisure) traveller.

Designed by Beth Murray from Origin Interiors, the hotel’s interior has a sense of relaxed drama. The contemporary space is a mixture of neutral colours and rich textures allowing for its creator’s careful attention to detail to filter through in surprising places. Gold chandeliers can be spotted in the arrival lounge area along with linen lampshades by the escalators while subtle gold chain curtains and simplistic bronze metal artworks grace the hotel’s corridors. Stylish and modern yet comfortable and unfussy, the hotel has an air of sophistication and simplicity that lends itself to an interesting balance of professionalism and relaxation.

There are 125 bedrooms in total – 115 superior bedrooms with one universally accessible bedroom, five executive options and five suites. Fully equipped, the various rooms are chic and practical offering everything one might need during a stay over. Although the superior and executive rooms feature the same dramatic minimalistic black and white designs, the executive rooms offer additional space, extended views as well as luxury Eames chairs and ottomans. Suites, on the other hand, are slightly larger and offer guests both a bedroom and sitting area. Ideal for families, visitors can transform the suites sitting area into a bedroom with a modern sleeper couch to sleep children under 12. What’s more, there is an option for interconnecting room (10 suites that can be converted in such a way).

The Square Café and Wine Bar
The ground floor is also home to The Square Café and Wine Bar. Serving breakfast, lunch and supper, the café whips up a morning buffet, an easy dining a-la-carte menu and a help-yourself daytime harvest table (with a weigh-and-pay system) for in-house guests and visitors.   Additionally, The Square Café also offers a gorgeous selection of deli items (think fresh salads and sandwiches, homemade soups and pies) ideal for those on the move.

“We want people to do things at their own pace here”, says Walda. “That is why everything is self-service. People must eat and enjoy at their leisure.” Self-service bean-to-cup coffee stations and Ronnefeldt tea areas are also strategically placed throughout the premises for bottomless warm beverages at no additional cost (hotel guests only). What’s more, hotel guests can also choose to order in-room take out.

In addition, the Wine Bar (open daily from 11am) offers visitors a great selection of the Cape’s reds and whites as well as a wide variety of other alcoholic beverages. The hotel also has a self-service walk-in wine cellar (which is to be finished in July 2016). The idea, as Walda explains, is for diners to choose what type of wine they would like from what region and what year; from there the cellar will formulate an array of vino suggestions for you to choose from.

Another major draw card is the location. Situated in the central hub of Century City as well as a stone’s throw away from a plethora of activities and leisure options, guests are truly spoilt for choice. Canal Walk Shopping Mall (one of Africa’s largest), Virgin Active health club, Ratanga Junction theme park, Life Day Spa (and so much more) are all within walking distance of the hotel. What’s more, the accommodation hotspot also forms part of the Century City Square in the Bridgeway precinct of Century City. The Square – The Square Café and Wine Bar spill out onto the open-plan space – boasts a range of additional eatery’s including Tiger’s Milk, Frank Café and Seattle Coffee. “The Square was designed to create an interaction between people living and working in the area, hotel guests as well as to attract those travelling home from work”, explains Walda. The open-air area is known for hosting live music events, markets and summer concerts.

Taking the location further into consideration – Century City is strategically situated on the N1 highway just outside Cape Town’s hustling CBD – it comes as no surprise that it is a prime location for functions and Walda makes mention to the conference venue located directly opposite the hotel. Designed as the hub and pivotal point of the precinct, the CCCC boasts 20 different venues including four large halls (three of which may be combined), a spacious, open-plan foyer suitable for exhibitions, launches and cocktail parties, 11 meeting rooms as well as a 80-seater business lounge with boutique buffet refreshments. Offering easy access to flexible conference, CCCC allows for businesses to tailor their packages to suit their specific needs.

Described as a “home away from home”, the Century City Conference Centre and Hotel aims to create an inspiring yet functional space for its visitors expertly designed to facilitate both the vocational and vacation(al) side of travelling. “The hotel is truly geared towards every kind of traveller – business and leisure, but not just the traveller, also those in the area to enjoy in the space and all of its unique offerings,” concludes Walda. “You can’t just walk in any hotel and have a beautiful self-service deli experience, a formal business meeting or find a space to work for the day but the Century City Conference Centre and Hotel offers guests just that.”
