Cape Town Opera’s fiery Carmen at the Artscape

Love, jealousy & music you know (you just don’t realise it)

Last updated: Wednesday, 1 April 2026

Cape Town Opera’s fiery Carmen is designed to captivate even those who have never stepped inside an opera house, with English and isiXhosa surtitles and iconic music you’ve definitely heard before. At its centre, there’s a bold love triangle and a dramatic ending you’re supposed to know in advance – part of what makes it one of the most famous operas in the world.

It’s happening from 19 to 31 May 2026 at the Artscape Theatre, with tickets from R180 to R950 (including 25% off for under-25s and 10% off for pensioners).

The story is based on Prosper Mérimée’s 1845 novella. Image: Cape Town Opera

OPERA PERFORMANCE AT THE ARTSCAPE

Lead character Carmen doesn’t ask for permission; she takes what she wants. She’s a factory worker with a fire that refuses to be tamed, and when she sets her sights on Don José, a soldier who is already entangled somewhere else, their collision is electric… especially when Carmen’s attention shifts to the charismatic bullfighter Escamillo.

Cape Town Opera’s production shifts the story from its original 19th-century Seville setting to the 1930s, set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, with stripped-back architectural scenery by Greg King and period-inspired costumes by Maritha Visagie.

Despite the setting, this isn’t a modernised “lite” version of opera. Directed by Steven Stead – whose work spans productions like Cabaret, Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd – it’s the full opera experience with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, 20 dancers and a large ensemble cast.

WHY IT’S IDEAL FOR FIRST-TIMERS

Even if you don’t think you know opera, you know Carmen. Its music has seeped into pop culture over decades, which is why Carmen is consistently ranked as one of the most popular operas of all time.

You’ll instantly recognise the first big musical moment from movies like The Talented Mr. Ripley, Ocean’s Twelve and Moulin Rouge! It comes early in the show, when Carmen steps forward and sings the famous “Habanera” aria (“L'amour est un oiseau rebelle”).

Likewise, Doctor Who and Sesame Street have featured the marching rhythm of Escamillo’s entrance to the “Toreador Song” (“Les voici! Voici la quadrille!”).

INSIDER TIP FOR FIRST-TIME OPERA-GOERS

Unlike movies, opera is better when you already know what happens. You're meant to know the plot so that the small details stand out more: how long a note is held, the way the orchestra swells before a decision is made, and how a glance across the stage carries weight.

When you arrive, you can buy a programme that explains the story and characters. All performances also include surtitles (subtitles) in English and isiXhosa above the stage, making it easy to follow along if you need to.

WHAT TO EXPECT: CARMEN PLAYLIST

If you want to arrive fully swept up in Carmen’s world, listen to the playlist below. Composer George Bizet’s melodies are infectious, pulling you into the drama and passion even before the curtain rises.

DISCOUNTS! CAPE TOWN OPERA TICKETS

For a production of this scale – with full orchestra, dancers, and a large ensemble cast – part of what makes it unique is how accessible it is.

Tickets range from R180 to R950 and are structured around your view of the stage and proximity to the performers. Closer seats offer a more detailed view of the singing, acting and orchestration, while lower-priced tickets are positioned further back or to the sides.

There’s a 25% discount available for under-25s, while pensioners receive around 10% off (across all ticket tiers), making it easier than ever to experience one of the world’s most iconic operas live on stage.

You can book individual tickets or look into season options if you’re planning to see more productions from Cape Town Opera this year.
