Award winning coffee, brunch for under R100, 6.45am start
Last updated: Monday, 27 May 2024
You can’t talk about Cape Town’s coffee culture without mentioning mischu, which opened in 2012 when the city’s caffeine buzz was still just humming.
It’s won five “Best Coffee in Cape Town” awards. This, and the 6.45am weekday open time, makes mischu a great spot for early morning risers, remote workers, and Promenade joggers. Here’s what the buzz (and brew) at mischu is all about, and why people keep coming back.
You’ll find mischu in the bustling streets of Sea Point, opposite the Spar on Regent Road. Image: mischu
There are four special blends at mischu and it's the Isabella that takes the cake (or croissant, in this case: mischu has fresh flakey croissants filled with Nutella).
The blend has won this coffee shop many trophies. Best Cappuccino in South Africa; Best Cappuccino in Cape Town; Best Espresso in Cape Town; and for three years in a row, Best Coffee in Cape Town.
The Isabella is named after founder Mikhael Bou Rjeily’s daughter, who was born the week her dad released his coffee blend to the South African market.
The blend is a 100% Arabica coffee from Brazil, Guatemala, and Costa Rica, with a mild pleasant acidity and a dark chocolate and roasted hazelnut aftertaste.
The coffee shop has a reputation for creating their own, superior, coffee blends, supplying shops and training baristas around Cape Town. Image: mischu
Besides the award-winning coffee, it’s the convenient location that brings feet in the door. You’ll find it on the bustling Regent Road in Sea Point. It’s ideal for runners to get their caffeine fix after a workout, and for dog walkers to stop by on their way to the Promenade (yes, furry friends are welcome).
Plus, the free unlimited wifi helps remote workers get a productive start to the day. Lots of people choose to sit in: The massive windows overlook the street, letting in plenty of natural light. Along with sleek black mirrors, the wooden shelves display coffee beans and board games.
The board games include wooden naughts and crosses and backgammon. Image: mischu
For those who do choose to sit in and eat, the menu at mischu is wholesome. There are options like chia seed pudding (topped with toasted coconut shavings, almond biscotti, and fruit) or avocado salsa on toast with crispy kale and feta.
Or you can try the chef’s picks. They include the gluten-free maple cinnamon granola bowl, and the mischu oats bowl, topped with berries, flaked almonds, cinnamon, dates, and honey.
Plus, breakfast is served until 4.30pm, making mischu a great brunch option. The brunch special costs just R99 at mischu.
Many of mischu’s dishes offer meat-free options and milk alternatives. Image: mischu
The Asian smoked pulled beef bowl (with bok choy, soba noodles, and carrots) is just one of the nutritious options on the lunch menu. There are lots of gluten-free options too, like the eggplant parmigiana sandwiched between pomodoro sauce and fresh basil.
And for comfort food, there are simple and satisfying bowls of soup. A classic paired with golden toasties. You can choose between butternut soup for R89 or tomato soup for R119.
There’s often daily specials at mischu. Image: mischu
Another great thing about mischu is its online store. You can buy beans and ground coffee, as well as decaf coffee, capsules, and coffee-making equipment.
If you’re not a coffee drinker, mischu also sells instant powders so you can make some of their in-store drinks at home (like a spicy chai and white or dark hot chocolate).
Browse the selection and buy mischu coffee online.
The other blends are Sienna, Honduras, and Ethiopia. Image: mischu
