Anyone joining the catwalk?
Last Updated: 06 December 2016
The City of Cape Town has just closed Burghers Walk in Simon’s Town to the public as various figures attempt to apprehend a caracal which is preying on the highly endangered African Penguin.
The caracal is a medium-sized wild cat that lives in Africa, the Middle East, Persia and the Indian subcontinent. Naturally nocturnal (active at night), the caracal is very secretive and difficult to observe. Caracals are threatened by severe habitat loss due to urbanisation, which has seen prey species being driven out. This has caused the big cats to wander into urban areas in search of food.

Extensive efforts are made to capture the feline and the City asks members of the public for their patience and cooperation during this time. According to Councillor Johan van der Merwe, assistance from the public and local residents will increase the chances of a successful capture. The boardwalk at Burgher Walk will be closed from 6pm to 6am daily to allow the capture team to work in the area.
These times will remain in place until further notice.
