If you’ve seen The Karate Kid (the original, not that Jaden Smith version), then you’ve seen Mr Miyagi prune his indoor plants. Those are bonsai trees.
If you’ve ever wanted your own indoor mini tree but aren’t sure where to start or how to take care of one, you’re in luck. There’s a bonsai beginners’ course happening on 14 July 2019 at the Stone Lantern Bonsai Nursery in Kraaifontein.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
You’ll get an in-depth full-day experience that will cover the theory and practical side of styling a bonsai plant. The theory-based first half of the course will cover the significance of bonsai plants, the basic rules of taking care of one, the different species, fertilising, wiring, pruning, styling and potting.
The second half of the course will see you putting the theory into practice, with the help of the Stone Lantern staff.
You’ll also learn about the tree types suited for bonsai, from Japanese maple to bodhi tree, baobab, pomegranate, juniper, ficus retusa and many more. You can style these varieties in several traditional ways such as informal upright, slanting, cascade, semi-cascade, literati, group planting, saikei, etc.

BONSAI BENEFITS
Bonsai plants are known to purify indoor air and are undoubtedly pretty to look at. But the process of growing them is said to be even more rewarding. The creative skill that goes into it will help bring out your artistic side and teach you patience. They’re also known for bringing peace and harmony - bonsai lovers will attest to the calming effects of caring for bonsai.

WHAT IT WILL COST YOU
Tickets for the course are R650 per person or R1100 per couple. To make a booking, send an email to: stonelantern@hotmail.com or contact Rhonel at 0833750446.
Refreshments will be served (coffee or tea in the morning before class, muffins with coffee or tea during teatime and boerewors rolls for lunch). Halaal and vegetarians will also be catered for.
You’ll get to take home your plant and a goodie bag with a workbook, three sizes of wire, a training pot, name tag, bonsai tool and a tree in a bag.
