Berg River Canoe Marathon

Are you tough enough to compete in one of the Western Cape’s most challenging water races?

Discover why you should run this marathon, half marathon or fun run in a quaint valley.

---

If you’ve got the strength, stamina and sheer willpower for four gruelling days of paddling, be sure to get your entry in for the 2017 Berg River Canoe Marathon now, and start preparing for the challenging water-soaked race. The marathon kicks off on Wednesday, 12 July in Paarl at the Market Street Bridge and ends on Saturday, 15 July 2017 in Velddrif.

A challenging 240km race, the Berg River Canoe Marathon is one of the longest and toughest competitive paddling challenges in Africa, and offers participating men and women a canoeing experience like no other. Fast-flowing narrow channels littered with trees, extended lengths of tough, character-testing flat water and the unrelenting rains characteristic of the Cape winter all combine to fully test your abilities.

Last year, Hank McGregor took the grand prize for a record 11th time and plenty of eager athletes will want to beat his time of 17:37:40 this year. In the women’s section, Bianca Beavitt snatched the title once again, breaking her record of last year with 20:27:15. The competition looks set to heat up this year, so be sure not to miss out!

The river runs north from Paarl, all the way up to the little town of Piketberg, before heading west towards the ocean and drawing to a close in the West Coast town of Velddrif. Spectators interested in watching the contest can find a number of spectator spots listed online at Berg.org.za.
