Winner combination of good beer, good music and good food
Every city has its institutions. The Dubliner at Kennedy's is one such Cape Town institution. Located on Long Street, this 'Genuine Irish Restaurant and Music Pub' seems almost out of place in the city's trendiest and liveliest street.
But after just one visit to The Dubliner you realise that it has that Irish charm to it, the kind that you don't need Irish blood for to appreciate.
You know those watering holes that can be likened to an old sofa. The one that's been in the house for ages but nobody really knows where it came from. It's well worn-in but still manages to look good and inviting.
Raise your glass to the Irish
It's hard to pinpoint what makes The Dubliner the comfortable, reliable, know-what-you're-getting place that it has become. When one looks at it from a distance, or from one of the bistro tables on the pavement, you realise that they can't actually go wrong because they have the winning combination...
Good beer, good food, good music
There's the beer, always a solid way to start. They have a very wide selection, the Pilsner Urquell and Guinness is available on tap, so it's a must. The food is great, wholesome Irish and South African fare. And it comes at a really decent price.
Students will be impressed by the size of the meal they can get for sixty bucks, while your 'ol' toppie' will be boasting to his mates about the bargain he picked up.
Must-try's at The Dubliner
Guinness Beef Pie, Fish & Chips and the Dubliner Hamburger with bacon and cheese - you won't be sorry.Cocktail sausages served with chips and The Dubliner's Famous Irish Coffee - a great lunchtime treat!
And then... there's music that caters to pretty much everyone's taste. From jazz to bands doing covers ranging from Living Next Door to Alice to Dancing Queen. Makes you want to sing along. Well, almost.
The extras
So you've got the beer, the music and the vibe. And then there's the fact that the kitchen stays open until 2am every morning. The Irish understand that there's nothing like mama's Irish stew or hamburgers and chips at 1:47.
To really appreciate The Dubliner you need to pop in after work on a Friday afternoon, grab a cold one and put your feet up. They don't mind if you do put your feet up. And just enjoy the vibe, it's totally unpretentious and just really very comfortable.
