It doesn’t get cosier than a log cabin perched above a still river in the Slanghoek Mountains. The Platbos log cabins deep in the mountains of Rawsonville offer silence and tranquillity that not many self-catering units can match. Each cabin has two bedrooms with queen-sized beds and a loft with two single beds. The cabins are gas and solar powered.

The Kersefontein Guest Farm on the West Coast is a piece of historic luxury that ticks all the boxes. Stroll along scenic country roads, chat to the farm animals or row your boat gently down a stream (the Berg River, which is abundant in wildflowers in the late winter months). For dinner with a difference, there’s an early nineteenth-century dining room, or if you feel like a hot toddie, check out the Turn & Slip pub, dedicated to owner Julian Melck’s passion for flying (and minutes away from the farm’s very own landing strip). Rooms have en-suite bathrooms and have been tastefully decorated with period antiques.
Rates: R690–R930pp per night depending on suite and views.
