The Hermanus Whale Festival

Have a whale of a time at this fun, family-friendly fiesta

For the 26th year South Africa’s first and only enviro-arts extravaganza, the Hermanus Whale Festival, celebrates the giant creatures of the deep, as well as top local performers from Friday, 29 September to Sunday, 1 October 2017.

As the site for the best land-based whale watching in the world, Hermanus is just the right place to pay homage to the magnificent Southern Rights. And there’s no better time to recognise their miraculous being than during October, which is peak whale-watching season in the coastal village.

The family friendly festival puts the massive mammals in the spotlight for recreational, as well as education purposes. Visitors get to enjoy the unbelievable sightseeing opportunities while getting clued up on the plight of the endangered creatures.

The marine giants will definitely remain the star of the show, but on land visitors to the seaside town can expect to be equally dazzled by great entertainment and activities, gut-busting eats, quality crafts and fun for kiddies. Expect to linger for hours at the Coke Live Music Marquee, where various  local artists will be performing over the three  days of the festival. The festival will include sports events, a three-day coaching clinic (hockey, soccer and cricket), kids entertainment, a music stage, a vintage car show and much more.

ACCOMMODATION FOR THE 2017 HERMANUS WHALE FESTIVAL

Those attending the Whale Festival will need somewhere to rest their weary heads each night and if affordable luxury is what you’re after, the Hermanus Beach Villa offers all the right trappings for an excellent night or two’s rest.  The B&B is nestled perfectly between the Blue Flag Grotto Beach and Voëlklip Beach so waking up in one of the suites feels like you’re already close to the whales.

Alternatively, bigger families and groups will absolutely love the Whale Coast Hotel’s mammoth two- and three-bedroom apartments, which not only come with a stunning view of the hulking mountains, but a state-of-the-art kitchen, comfy beds and braai facilities too.
