Aquila Private Game Reserve caters for those with a taste for the great things in life or those who want to spot South Africa's big five, without a time-consuming trek. At Aquila, visitors can experience wildlife in style, whilst partaking in a range of scenic, game-related activities.
This luxury, four-star game reserve is situated on a 4,500 hectare stretch of nature reserve including, hills, valleys, mountains, rivers and indigenous fynbos. Just a two hour drive from Cape Town (over the breathtaking Du Troitskloof Pass), the reserve offers exclusive, malaria-free accommodation, in the heart of the African bush.
Accommodation that epitomises romance and indulgence
Aquila Game Reserves Premium Cottages are built into the hillside, boasting spacious, sunlit rooms with four-poster beds. The bathrooms epitomise romance and indulgence: large baths are set into the natural rock and guests may cool off in outdoor rock-showers.
The standard cottages offer spectacular views over one of the watering holes at the reserve and guests can relax on the wooden deck, whilst observing game including; Cape buffalos, springboks and rhinos. Aquila offers luxury, family chalets for up to seven people, with tasteful décor and attic bedrooms for kids.
All rooms are provided with fresh towels, blankets, hot water bottles, hair dryers and eco-friendly cosmetics.
A unique range of activities in the heart of the Southern Karoo Highlands
Guests may embark on a morning, or afternoon game drive, accompanied by knowledgeable and enthusiastic rangers. Morning game drives begin at 6:00 or 7:00 and comfortable blankets are provided with your 4x4 vehicle, to ward off the morning chill while you see the sun come up.
Aquila also offer very unique 1.5 hour horseback safaris, which are a unique animal-to-animal experience that will enable visitors to get much closer to the wildlife. Visitors are assigned a horse to suit their level of experience and horses are used to being around the animals within the reserve. Alternatively, those with a taste for adventure may embark on a quad biking safari. You will be looked after by two qualified game rangers who will explain how to ride the bikes. Then it's just you, 250cc of horsepower between your legs, and a ostrich.
South African, home cooked meals and lounging poolside
The beautiful new restaurant at Aquila, opened in September 2009, shows African characteristic and is built from natural materials, to blend in beautifully with the natural environment. The restaurant boasts large fireplaces and high ceilings, where sublime South African buffets are whipped up by local chefs.
Folks seeking solace from the rigours of city life can relax by one of two swimming pools, the first of which is one of the biggest pools that any safari lodge has ever built in South Africa. Sip on a chilled drink at the poolside bar (open from November-March), whilst busy little meerkats scamper by.
Visiting Cape Town in the near future? Head over to Aquila for the weekend and you'll come face-to-face with the big five, without having to travel too far from Cape Town.
Molo says: “For tourists who are on the run, Aquila offers special day safari packages from Cape Town that include; transport, breakfast, lunch, a game drive and a visit to the Aquila animal rescue centre.”
