New: Karoo Eco Family Farm Accommodation and Experiences

Brand-new Njalo-Njalo offers idyllic family farm accommodation just 2 hours outside of Cape Town

100% solar-powered, farm-fresh organic restaurant and food, plus: electric go-karts for kids, race track, farm animals and picturesque farm drive with loads of game. Njalo-Njalo Safaris in Touws River does really special eco family farm accommodation and experiences for weekenders and big groups.

Just 2 hours from Cape Town, it’s a haven of cottages with interlinking rooms (for families) around a massive braai boma (for big bookings). Expect a mix of farmyard animal experiences for the little ones and a pristine chlorine-free pool with spots to relax in hammocks dotted all around. And, of course, the big focus is eco-living.

Everything here is solar powered. 100%. And most of the food is grown right here, too. Cabbage, lettuce, carrots, butternut, beetroot, herbs and spices – they’re all lovingly sprouted in big troughs right inside the restaurant (yes, you dine amongst the green sprouts) before being re-planted outdoors. Even the eland biltong and incredible stews served with quinoa are straight off this same farm.

The farmyard animals (baby goats, ostrich, turtles chickens etc.) and the wild game (7 species of antelope, wildebeest and zebra) are all treated the way nature intended. The game isn’t fed too much, except if there’s a drought, so they are truly wild and natural. Darting is not tolerated, so all animals are brought in as babies and that’s it.

You’ll learn all about it from proudly Bavarian hosts Winfrid and Daniela Perschi’s 5-year-old son Ludwig, who runs the farm arrival and welcome tour in his electric go-kart.

Back in Bavaria, Winfrid and Daniela were both qualified health consultants (Winfrid is a Kneipp health instructor). And, when they moved to SA (many years ago to run their own B&B in Oudtshoorn), of course, they would advocate healthy living.

All the food is organic. And the big thatch-roofed restaurant serves a mix of farm-fresh South African food and traditional Bavarian cuisine. Expect an ultra-healthy breakfast spread meant to keep you going all day. Featuring everything from freshly made bread, seeds, charcuterie and cheese to homemade patisserie, preserves and grains and even vegan Nutella chocolate. Also look out for the Njalo Power Breakfast (good with fruit) and the hot breakfasts – including ostrich egg omelette when available.

Dinners are tasty Bavarian fare. From knödels to shrimp sauce, quinoa and creamy eland stew to roasted garden veg and pork in beer sauce. And the restaurant is currently only open to farm guests, so it’s really intimate and Daniela has the time to explain how each dish is prepared farm-fresh on the day.

A few of the semi-self-catering units are conjoined with doors that can open either way. So you can sleep up to six and all be close together as if you’re in the same house (without limiting privacy). And the rooms are cosy with a big shower, Openview HD TV and every amenity you could ask for. Plus, there’s a separate communal kitchen with fridges, ovens and stoves as well as lockable storage for each unit.

A few entirely self-catering units are available, too. They’re basically small homes, complete with kitchens and various rooms.

“We wanted people to be able to arrive in a big van and all have a place to stay,” Winfrid says, “so we created space for up to 23-plus guests to stay comfortably”. This notably makes it ideal for big group bookings, too. With a fully stocked bar, complete with jukebox and pool tables, swimming pool, a spa coming soon and the big restaurant, it’s perfect for a family reunion, big birthday celebration and even weddings.

Let’s get to the good part: The farm is 20 000 hectares in size, so there’s an incredible farm drive experience (R200pp) where you’ll see eland, springbuck, ostrich, sable, zebra and more. But it’s also ideal for hiking and mountain biking (there are no predators on the farm), with an additional renovated old farmhouse with water and showers out in the middle of nowhere (2 hours’ walk from nearest civilisation) that you can also hire. Or, camp at the beautiful “uitkyk” up against the mountain overlooking the farm.

On the main farm though, there’s a farmyard for the kids (and parents) to enjoy, big pool, loads of hammocks, the bar and – best of all – a homemade racetrack where kids can go-kart and the parents can follow as “safety cars” on Winfrid’s adult electric bikes. There’s a big play area next to the restaurant, complete with a sizable jungle gym, safe climbing wall and trampoline. Again, friendly little Ludwig will happily show the little ones the ropes.
