Free Entrance to Iziko Museums During Heritage Week

Entrance to all Iziko Museums in Cape Town will be free on Heritage Day and the rest of Heritage Week 2008

This Heritage Day, Iziko Museums are offering a bountiful programme of events, all proudly homegrown. To further commemorate the occasion, entrance to all Iziko Museums will be free to the public from September 22 to 28, 2008.

On Heritage Day, proceedings begin at 10am with some Klopse Culture influence, as the internationally acclaimed Ashwin Willemse Orient Development Marching Band escorts visitors from the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum in Wale Street to the Iziko Koopmans-De Wet House in Strand Strand.

Here, at 4pm, visitors will enjoy a live re-enactment of the life and times of the famous Marie Koopmans-De Wet – as narrated by Ms Nothing, servant of the elegant socialite.

The performance by the Rooster Theatre Collective at Koopmans-De Wet House, probably the Cape’s most pristine house museum, will be set against a soundscape of women singing and beading.

Further activities take place at the Iziko Slave Lodge and the Iziko South African Museum that include poetry, dance and music performances, behind-the-scenes tours, a mini expo and film screenings.

To add to the excitement, Good Hope FM will be broadcasting live from the SA Museum on the day between 9am and 12noon and the public will be able to meet their favourite Good Hope FM radio personality, Sugar.

At Iziko South African National Gallery, a variety of exhibitions will be on view to which visitors will have free access on Heritage Day. These include the opening of the Stephen Shore – Colouring American Photography.

And of course, for children, there will be a whole host of activities on Heritage Day, including a treasure hunt, drum-making, creative writing and photography workshops.
