Where to pick fruit and flowers

Picking spots with wine tastings, petting zoos and even snow in winter

No matter the time of year, there’s something to pick: Sumptuous summer berries; hearty winter veg and herbs; and dazzling dahlias, snapdragons, hydrangeas and roses all year long.

BLUEBERRIES & JUICE TASTINGS 

At the Blueberry Bar in Paarl, owners take an eco-friendly approach - the plants are treated with mushroom spray and predator bugs instead of pesticides. Besides blueberries, you can also buy rusks, biscotti, jam and juice all made with the produce, or even do a blueberry juice tasting. 

When to pick: October - December
Opening hours: Saturday to Sunday, 8am - 3pm
Cost: Picking: R75 kids bucket , R85 adults bucket; blueberry juice tastings: R60 for kids, R70 for adults

FRESH FRUIT & PICNICS IN TULBAGH 

Murludi, a family-run fruit farm in Tulbagh, hosts peach and apricot picking events in December and January. Visitors can also join their weekly fruit picking - bring your own container and fill from the farm's harvest bins. They also offer picnics (with optional pre-packed baskets) and hikes at Murludi

When to pick: Events: 13 December (apricots) and 31 January (peaches)
Opening hours:

  • October to May; Monday to Sunday, 8am to 5pm

  • June to September; Monday to Sunday; 9am to 4pm

Cost: R140 for adults, R80 for kids 8 to 12 years

FLOWER WORKSHOPS & PICKING 

Flourish Urban Flower Farm is a private garden in Constantia hosts flower picking sessions, where you’re provided with a large bucket and foliage and fillers. You’ll be able to pick flowers like dahlias (including the rare dinner plate dahlias), zinnias, cosmos, Queen Anne's lace, and scabiosa. Or opt for workshops on floral design, wreaths and gardening. 

When to pick: All year (flowers vary depending on time of year)

PET ANIMALS, TOO 

Known for their reasonably-priced organic veggies (artichokes, beetroot, spinach and more) and fruit (apples, bananas, grapefruit, lemons), Anna Buelah is a Durbanville-based farm home to chickens, horses, donkeys, lambs, bunnies and alpacas that kids can pet. A deli, coffee shop, and arts, crafts, and vintage clothing store provide more for the grown-ups to explore. 

When to pick: October - December
Opening hours: Monday to Friday 8am - 4pm; Saturday closed; Sunday 8am - 4pm
Cost: From R10 per kilogram

VEG AND HERBS IN ORANJEZICHT   

You might know about the popular Oranjezicht City Farm market in Granger Bay, but did you know you can also visit the farm itself (in Oranjezicht) to pick your own fresh veg and herbs? There’s a wide range – like beetroot, carrots, green beans, spinach, mint, oregano, and rosemary. 

When to pick: All year
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 8am - 2pm
Cost: From R80 per kilogram

CHERRIES IN SUMMER + SNOW IN WINTER 

Klondyke Cherry Farm in Ceres can be visited year round: During summer, Klondyke Cherry Farm opens daily for cherry-picking (with popular red cherries, as well as the less sweet yellow variety). And in winter, visitors can experience snow. The farm has cottages and camping facilities too. 

When to pick: 30 November - 31 December
Opening hours: Daily, 8.30am - 4.15pm
Cost: R40 for adults,  R20 for kids under 10. R95 per kilogram

NECTARINES, FIGS, PEACHES: YOU CHOOSE

Hoogwater Farm, in picturesque Wolseley near the Breede River, invites visitors to pick apples, nectarines, peaches, pears and figs to heart’s content. This is one of the few places where you can eat as much as you'd like while in the orchards. 

When to pick: Nectarines: November - December. Apples, peaches, pears and figs: January - February
Opening hours: Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 1pm
Cost: R60 for adults, R30 for kids under 13; free for kids under 3

BERRIES & 10 LIQUER TASTINGS

Nicknamed Swellendam’s “berried treasure”, Wildebraam in the Heritage Valley is a picturesque location for berry picking. Besides picking youngberries and blackberries without a booking (you can just show up), you can also taste 10 South African liqueurs. The owners advise picking in the morning when the berries are firm.

When to pick: Mid November to end of December
Opening hours: Picking is Monday to Friday 8am - 3.45pm; Saturday 9am - 2.45pm; Sunday 9am - 12.45pm
Cost: From R40 per kilogram plus R20 entry for adults and R15 for children

GO WINE TASTING AFTER YOUR PICKING 

De Krans Wine Farm in Calitzdrop offers peach and apricot picking during summer. Notably, it’s the home of the first pink port-style wine, and the first Perlé Moscato wine in South Africa. After picking your fruit, you can do a tasting, dine at the bistro or browse the well-stocked deli.

When to pick: November (apricots) and December (peaches)
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 8am - 4pm
Cost: R10 per kg (peaches) and R9 per kg (apricots)

STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES

Chart Farm in Wynberg is the perfect spot for a sweet daytime date, or a catch-up with friends or family. Its popular patio café overlooks the Wynberg and Constantia vineyards. The rose garden has more than 15 varieties, and with the backdrop of the mountain, it makes for incredible photo ops. The farm also offers horse riding. 

When to pick: Most of the year except August and September
Opening hours: Daily, 9am - 4pm
Cost: R10 per stem (pick-your-own), R12 per stem (ready picked)

SOME OF THE BEST STRAWBERRIES

Boasting one of the best strawberry harvests in greater Cape Town, Mooiberge Strawberry Farm in Stellenbosch is a colourful, quirky place complete with giant strawberries, jungle gyms and a farm stall filled with local and imported goods like Biscoff spread. 

When to pick: October - December
Opening hours: Saturday to Sunday, 9:30am to 4:30pm
Cost: R40 per kilogram
