Excentric Hair Salon in Cape Town

Cut, colours, bangs, tints and transformations at Sea Point hair salon

Few hair salons will take the time to understand your day-to-day hair demands before suggesting a cut and colour. But Excentric Hair goes that extra mile. “We believe a hairstyle needs to suit you as a person. If you lead an active lifestyle, we need to give you a cut and colour that matches that,” says owner and master stylist Florin (Flo) Neacsu. That's why the stylists at this sleek Sea Point salon tailor-make hairstyles for every client – ensuring your look is both manageable and unique.

And an important part of this is also taking a practical approach to hair. The stylist will balance your personal and lifestyle needs with your overall look, including your skin tone, facial features, bone structure, eye colour, and fashion sense when suggesting a style for you.

This thorough and technical treatment of hair is the result of Flo’s commitment to excellence. The award-winning hair stylist, who opened Excentric Hair at Sea Point in 2014, has styled and cut hair in dozens of countries, including Germany and the UK. He and wife (and salon manager) Safeera have also worked on cruise ships where, as a result, they’ve come to appreciate the need for consistency in quality – especially when working with high client volumes. “It’s important to us that our clients know that we stay up to date with hair innovations. We attend seminars so that we can offer six-star service,” says Safeera.

What’s more, the popular hair salon has its own manual. All learners, apprentices and stylists study the handbook to ensure the Excentric Hair service standard is maintained across the salon floor. “The manual covers everything from how you greet the client, how you wash their hair and what technique to use for a head massage, to colouring and cutting. Absolutely everything the stylists need to know about how Excentric does things is in the book,” Flo explains. “They’ll (the hair stylists) still have their signature style, but the technicality must the same.”

Excentric Hair’s motto, “Dare to be different,” is a call to action. “We’re not necessarily saying, ‘dare to be strange’… All we’re saying is think a little differently to the way you’ve been thinking,” Flo says.

Transformations are offered to men who’ve been getting the same haircut for 20 years. Women who have been ruining their hair with the same “box dye” since the 70s can think outside of it – so to speak – with the help of these hair specialists. Flo, who’s a genius when it comes to hues and highlighting, will know exactly which tint to apply and in which concentration to achieve the desired shade.

“I used to relax and straighten my hair, because that is how we’re taught to have our hair. Slowly but surely, Flo convinced me to go natural,” Safeera shares. So, your transformation might not be drastic but, as Safeera puts it, “it’s about embracing the best you, which is liberating”.

Endeavouring to push the boundaries and challenge the status quo, Flo believes that the key to having great hair is not necessarily about going for the trendiest style out there, but rather about what looks best on you.  The hair stylist, who has worked with Mooimaak on kykNET and represented South Africa in the 2017 International Trend Vision Awards (Wella Education), places more importance on the health of your hair, the quality of the products used and the happiness of clients than on must-do styles for the season. The salon is full of creative stylists who set their own trends and innovate in unique ways.

Excentric’s precise methodology relies on clients trusting that they’ll get the kind of cut or colour that they want and that the look will last long after they’ve walked out of the hair salon.

“In my opinion, a good cut is something that still looks amazing even after three months. Your hair will always look great when you leave the salon. My goal is not for it to look good today; it’s for it to look good every day after that,” Flo concludes.

Tip: You can now book your Excentric Experience online at www.excentric-hair.co.za or via their Facebook, @ExcentricHairArtists. The salon offers free Wi-Fi, complimentary tea, coffee and champagne. While you wait for your colour to develop, you can also make use of the nail bar that specialises in both luxury and express manicures and pedicures.

The Bill: Prices are pretty reasonable. A ladies cut costs between R400 and R450, while the price for a gent's cut and style ranges between R270 and R300. Colouring is priced from R450 depending on the length and request, highlighting is between R600 and R1200 and treatments ring in at between R230 and R1800. On the nail bar side, a luxury manicure is priced from R245 to R280, while an express mani is between R140 and R200. A luxury pedicure is between R265 and R365.

* Excentric Hair has recently opened a second store. Found at 73 Regent Road, Excentric on Point will be offering extended hours (Monday to Friday: 9am–8pm. Saturday: 9am–4pm.
