Get exciting food and a feel of luxury.
Last Updated: 21 November 2016
Looking for a venue to experience food classics? The Shortmarket Club is definitely the place to be to enjoy creative sauces and sides as well as modernised classics with a luxurious old-world feel. Luke Dale-Roberts, owner of The Test Kitchen, has partnered with his wife Sandalene Dale-Roberts, his top chef Wesley Randles and manager Simon Widdison to open The Shortmarket Club situated in a heritage building, just off vibey Bree Street. The Shortmarket Club generated quite a ripple of excitement through the city ahead of its opening on 27 June this year.
The old school interior design creates a brilliant atmosphere enhanced by the excellent service we have come to expect from a Dale-Roberts establishment. Breakfast is nothing short of inspirational and diners can choose between a variety of dishes that include shiitake broiche toast soldiers with boiled eggs, quinoa granola made on the premises and a classic Arnold Benette Omelette. Lunch starter options include West Coast oysters with Asian add-ons or beef Carpaccio, with a miso cured egg yolk. Pre-dinner drinks and post-dinner drinks add to a well rounded evening out.
The open kitchen features a dedicated braai area where smokey kingklip, tomahawk steaks, ribeye, fillet and crayfish leave the grill for the dining area. Creativity is never short at the restaurant – think savoury churros, chips in duck fat and their own signature, café au lait sauce of The Pot Luck Club fame. The stuffed petit poussin is roasted to order and carved at the table, adding a bit of theatre to the whole dining experience.
Guests enter the restaurant from a staircase to the first floor where the open kitchen is the first thing you see.
We love the wall of framed butterflies, as it creates a remarkable visual focus.
Tip: Walk-ins are welcomed, but the place has created a buzz amongst locals, so do make a booking!
