A Children’s Birthday Party Idea That Won’t Get On Your Nerfs

There’s an obstacle course, toy guns, and plenty of good clean fun

It’s your child’s birthday, but you’re draped over a chair, drink in hand, chilled. Sure, there’s excited chatter and squealing nearby, but you’ve caught up with your adult friends, had a snack, maybe even read a chapter of your book.

That’s because your kid’s birthday bash is a Nerf battle, an outdoor, action-packed alternative to the run-of-the-mill kid’s party, where the organisers, Scout Smart Ideas, come to you. They bring everything including a game marshall.

“We put on quite a show for the kids, keeping them entertained and hyped throughout the whole experience,” says owner Graeme Bettles.

SETTING THE BATTLE SCENE
In a Nerf battle players team up and dart behind barrels and props, dodging the opposing team’s foam bullets. Scout Smart Ideas knows how stressful kids’ parties can be, so they take care of everything. All you need to do is book, and they arrive with a large range of props, guns, battle music, team bandanas, protective eyewear, face paint.

Their professional team rallies up the troops and keep them well entertained for the duration of either a one or two hour nerf battle. All of this can take place in your own backyard: they bring everything along and no matter the size of the space, they’ll set it up to look great and make for an epic battle.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN
There are a few options to choose from:

  • King of the hill: One player from each team is on the field. If you’re hit, you’re replaced by the next team member. The winning team is the team that has the most players remaining after a set time.

  • Capture the flag: Each team gets a flag. Teams need to get their opponents’ flag without being hit and return it to their "base."

  • Elimination: Two full teams are on the field. If a team member is hit, they come off the range. The first team with no members left on the field loses.

  • Sniper shoot-out: Each player gets a turn to shoot six shots at a target. The team with the highest number of hits wins.

  • Gun run: The birthday boy/girl has to run the gauntlet while all their friends stand at a reasonable distance and fire at him/her as they run through the entire range.

  • Free play: A controlled Nerf battle with no rules or specific game elements. One of the greatest

The final battle (if the children allow it, of course) is parents vs kids, so you can join in the fun and have a laugh with the little ones.

GOOD CLEAN FUN
The Scout Smart Ideas team will keep your kids hyped and entertained for the entire battle; they’ll forget all about TVs and devices, get outdoors, and get some exercise, all while having a (literal) blast. They’ll have to work as a team to win. The game marshall keeps a close eye on things, making sure the game is safe, fun, and inclusive. The soft darts are harmless, but kids are supplied with protective eyewear just in case - plus it looks badass, with the war paint.

PLAN THE PARTY
This game is suitable for ages from six to 14 and the ideal group size is eight to 15. The smallest group Scout Smart Ideas can accommodate is four and the largest 35. Bookings are essential and can be made online

Scout Smart Ideas will try to facilitate any booking, and are currently running a weekday special. The pricing is as follows:

  • Weekday special 45-minute after-school battle: R99 per child (weekdays only, excluding school holidays or public holidays)

  • 1-hour battle: R149 per child

  • 2-hour battle R199 per child

For their birthday, organise your kids a nerf party in Cape Town.
