A shop best described in three words: colourful, candy and nostalgia
The Pompous Fly, what a name. They say, it’s "a delightful olde world shop which offers a collector's dream of collectibles, fascinating bric-a-brac and a range of interesting items for gifts or simply for yourself." That’s it. Cute, even though it’s not only for girls.
What invites me in is the beautiful old candy vendor. I love all things vintage so this is my space. There are also colourful new things like handbags and rain sticks, besides candy sold the old-fashioned way (nice to see even if you’re off-candy) and nostalgic things like ceramics. It’s beautiful and romantic… a good place to get something for the jaws and home.
The Pompous Fly sells antique silver collectables, amber, silver and gold jewellery, unusual reading lamps, a collection of old and new tins, wooden toys, candles, old and new enamel, kitchenalia, old fashioned candy, old money - somewhat like 'Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe'.
A little something for everyone – and you never know what you can find… If you’re lucky, you can meet shop owner Carol Hobson at the Pompous Fly in the Old Posthouse at Noordhoek Farm Village, when she is not scouring Cape Town for interesting items for the Pompous Fly. Carol will tell a passionate story about every piece in this store of originals, and despite the quaint name it is highly unlikely that you will find the proverbial pompous fly in the ointment.
'It’s a place where the debates on the cost of a Chappie’s chewing gum is one of the most frequent discussions overheard by parents after visiting the Pompous Fly.'
What are you waiting for? Go find treasures! Treasure can be described as a concentration of riches, often one which is considered lost or forgotten until being rediscovered. Right you are at the Pompous Fly.
