Unusual things to do for Easter in Cape ...
Not your typical plans. Candle concert, (free) light art, game drive & more
If you’ve been living under a rock or haven’t quite tuned in to the Big Concerts fuss, then listen up! As part of her Diamonds World Tour, Barbadian superstar and pop music queen-in-training Rihanna heads to Cape Town for a one night concert at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday, 16 October 2013.
Some of you may remember RiRi (as she’s lovingly known by her fans) as opening act for her mentor, Jay-Z, on his South African tour in 2006; she performed many of the hits that put her on the map, like ‘Pon de Replay’ and ‘SOS’. The Bridgetown beauty has, since, graduated from her days as a supporting artist to become one of the world’s leading solo acts and an icon in the music industry.
During early years, critics slated the young starlet for looking and sounding too much like Beyoncé, some even going as far as saying that Jay-Z was creating a carbon copy of his then fiancé. Consequently, the ‘Stay’ singer made a pointed effort to transition from her innocent girl-next-door look to an edgier and very sexy good-girl-gone-bad persona (“Good Girl Gone Bad” also happens to be the title of her third studio album). And if her growing fandom and widespread popularity is anything to go by, the mischievous makeover has certainly done no harm.
In fact, since being discovered in 2004, the chart-topper has released seven studio albums and has as many Grammy awards under her belt. In 2012, her label, Def Jam, awarded her a recognition plaque for selling over 25 million records and 75 million singles, statistics that firmly place her in the top tier of best selling artists of all time.
Today, with no less than 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 charts (she’s the youngest female artist to achieve this feat), the superstar walks in the footsteps of the musical greats.
Even with all her success, though, the songstress’s career has been marred with controversy. Her to-and-fro with former ex-boyfriend (is anything less certain) and domestic abuser Chris Brown has violence against women activists up in arms. Not to mention, the bad girl recently launched her clothing line for River Island’s Autumn/Winter 2013 collection to criticism that the apparel is too flashy or trashy.
Rihanna is not one to go silently into the night, though; and whether you love her or loathe her, this hit-making diva is bound to put on a ravishing concert in Cape Town with glitzy costume changes, pulsating light shows and gyrating moves.
