Café Extrablatt has the kind of laid-back charm that makes it easy to drop in, whether it’s for a quick cappuccino in the morning, a long, lazy weekend brunch, or cocktails and shisha at sundown. Easy-going, unpretentious and open 365 days a year, it shifts its mood with the day, drawing early risers, lunchtime regulars and night owls.

CAFÉ EXTRABLATT, ALL-DAY CAFÉ 

First opened in Germany, Café Extrablatt found its home in Cape Town in 2011. The menu mixes familiar comfort food with a few German dishes like roulade (German rolled beef), currywurst (traditional sausage seasoned with a curry sauce), and köningsberger klopse (meatballs in a creamy white sauce with capers). They have a range of pasta, burgers, and grills too.

FANTASTIC COFFEE & WEEKEND BUFFETS 

Although you’ll find a great everyday breakfast here too, it’s the weekend buffets that they’re famous for.

Every Saturday (9am to 12pm) and Sunday (9am to 2pm including public holidays), locals flock to the café for a buffet spread that includes flaky pastries, cheeses, cold cuts, build-your-own omelettes and warm waffles. It’s the kind of breakfast that easily stretches into a leisurely brunch.

Extrablatt’s coffee of choice, Oscaffé, was chosen with Cape Town’s “soft” water (water with a low mineral content) in mind. Minerals impact the taste of coffee, with calcium making it more creamy or magnesium bringing out the acidity. Extrablatt’s beans result in a brew that’s smooth and not too acidic.

It’s also easy to see why families love it: Kids under 10 years old are charged half price. At the back of the café is a colourful kids’ corner, with a punchy superhero mural, blackboard, toys and storybooks.

SHISHA LOUNGE IN GREEN POINT  

While downstairs is lovely for families, upstairs is where the party is. The shisha lounge and bar attracts a younger, more eclectic crowd – friends sharing a pipe, couples having cocktails and regulars who come for the music.

DJs play laidback house and Afro beats every weekend (it’s always free entry), making the space feel more like a rooftop hangout than a traditional café.

If you’re planning to unwind in the lounge, there are two types of shisha pipes: The classic Egyptian pipe with a ceramic head and aluminium stem, and a more luxurious VIP glass pipe, which uses coconut coals for a cleaner, longer and more aromatic smoke.

Flavours range from watermelon, passion fruit and blueberry to popular blends like Lady Killer (a tropical fruit mix) and Gum Mint (a cool blast of spearmint bubblegum).

SCREENINGS FOR FOOTBALL & RUGBY

If the upstairs lounge is vibey on the weekends, that energy peaks when there’s a big game on, turning Café Extrablatt into one of Green Point’s liveliest sports spots. Fans can grab a beer and cheer loudly with friends upstairs, or you can watch quietly over dinner downstairs.

Both floors stream live fixtures, with sound on for major games like the Premier League, Bundesliga showdowns, Springbok matches and major rugby tournaments – especially when there’s action happening next door at the  DHL stadium.

The close proximity to the stadium makes it a prime spot for fans to meet before and after events, whether it’s a rugby match, marathon or concert.

WEEKDAY FOOD, COCKTAIL SPECIALS

If you’re ever looking for a reason to go out after work, Café Extrablatt’s specials make it easy and affordable to catch up with friends or go on a mid-week date.

The Monday Madness pizza special that runs all day (any two regular pizzas for R255). On Wacky Wednesdays, order any two burgers (like biltong and brie or a classic cheese burger) and get the cheaper one free.

And where else in Cape Town can you get a cocktail for R60? Happy hour happens every Monday to Friday from 5pm to 8pm on all their regular cocktails like negronis, frozen daiquiris, and cosmopolitans. There’s an excellent wine list and craft beer selection, too.

HOW TO FIND IT & WHERE TO PARK

You’ve probably driven past without realising it’s there. Café Extrablatt is inside the green and white Exhibition building, right by the large roundabout opposite DHL Stadium.

There’s free parking across the street, making it an easy pit stop before an event or after a stroll on the promenade. Café Extrablatt keeps the locals coming back; for the coffee, the cocktails and the company.
