Pinotage is South Africa’s national grape, and one of the wine estates that bottles it the best is Diemersfontein Wine & Country Estate. Its Coffee Chocolate Pinotage has been dubbed the People’s Pinotage by wine guru Neil Paddock. Don’t take his word for it, though, sample it yourself at Pinotage on Tap, which takes place at the estate on 28 September, during Heritage month. If that’s not one of the best ways to celebrate our wine heritage, we don’t know what is.


THE PINOTAGE PARTY IS FOR EVERYONE
Did you know that the Pinotage Party was voted the Best Wine Event in the World in 2014 by Drinks International, the world’s leading drinks news and analysis resource? So this is for all wine drinkers, serious and those who drink it just for pure, unadulterated fun.


And wine snobs, worry not: the chocolate and coffee is not false flavourant. The secret is in the way the barrels are toasted, says Hannelize Mouton, Diemersfontein Wine’s Sales and Marketing Manager. It’s this flavour that’s released into the wine while it’s maturing in the barrels, giving it that special coffee and chocolate explosion on the tongue.

CONSISTENTLY PRODUCING THE BEST
It may be a new vintage, but it’s the same old famous Coffee Chocolate Pinotage. The key to the success of the pinotage is the consistency of its production,’ says Mouton. ‘People come back because they know they’re getting the same great Coffee Chocolate flavour.’ To be precise, the wine has a fresh brewed coffee flavour mixed with dark chocolate as well as hints of fruity plum and a touch of mint.


PRESENTING THE PRODIGY
Diemersfontein will also be introducing its new pinotage, The Prodigy, at the event. This lighter, fruit-driven pinotage shows off a more youthful and vibrant character, channeling strong flavours of fruits including mulberry, black berry, cherry and plum. The 2018 vintage will be available from the Diemersfontein tasting room, but you could also win it if you enter the golf-putting game, a boot- and ring-throwing competition and more – it promises to be a action-filled event of fun.


IT’S NOT ONLY ABOUT THE WINE
Did anyone say chocolate fountains? You read right. There will be an endless supply of cocoa goodness and for serious wine drinkers, the tasting room will be open with options beyond Coffee Chocolate Pinotage. There will also be wine-pairing sessions with Montagu Snacks and Roses Handmade Confectionery, a Paarl-based artisanal baking and confectionery shop.


The festival is as famous for its live entertainment as it is for the pinotage and this year’s live line-up includes the husband-and-wife folk-rock duo Bottomless Coffee Band, award-winning singer-songwriter Amy Jones and four-piece acoustic group Newton & Co.
