Find everything from mussels and oysters to handmade lamps and hoodies
It’s been a while since we've been able to browse for bargains and rare finds or enjoy delicious street food with the sun on our face. The good news is, Cape Town’s markets are (figuratively) opening their doors for the first time since the beginning of lockdown.
A BARGAIN-HUNTER’S PARADISE
Hunt for treasured buys for hours at the Milnerton Flea Market, the biggest in Cape Town. Traders offer antiques, collectables, art, clothes, bric-a-brac, food, gemstones, tools, hardware, and more – it’s a great place to find second-hand kitchenware. The market was created to give people who weren’t employed in the formal trading a place to trade. Please note, you won’t be allowed into the market without a mask and temperature checks will be done upon entry. Social distancing will also be in place.
Open: Saturdays: 7am-2pm, Sundays: 7am-3pm

FROM GOURMET FOODS TO CRAFTED CLOTHES
The Goodwill at the Mill weekly pop-up market, organised by the Old Biscuit Mill’s regular tenants, will take place every Saturday until the regular Neighbourgoods Market is back in full swing. Foodies, chefs, baristas, artists, designers and artisans will showcase what they have to offer. Expect fine food from Luke Dale Roberts, The Pot Luck Club & Gallery, Redemption_Burgers and coffee from Espressolab. Social distancing will be enforced, all visitors’ temperatures will be checked and sanitiser will be provided.
Open: Every Saturday, 9am-2pm

And if you're not planning on leaving the house, a lot of market vendors have gone online and are doing home deliveries. Scratch that Saturday market itch by scrolling through these options.
(NON-ALCOHOLIC) CRAFT BEER AND BURGERS
Redemption Burgers, a Neighbourhood Goods Market (at the Old Biscuit Mill) favourite, have their full menu available for delivery. Plus, they’ve partnered with the Devils Peak Brewery, Ryan Boon Meats, Deluxe Coffee Works and more to give you a little extra. Order in the classic Straight Ace real beef patty burger with chips or try the sinful vegetarian burger with their homemade roasted tomato relish and grilled halloumi cheese. Top your meal off with a Zero to Hero non-alcoholic Lager from the Devils Peak Brewery or a non-alcoholic Kings Ginger beer from Dragon Ginger.
Delivery areas: Woodstock, City Bowl, Green Point, Sea Point, Mouille Point and Observatory.
How to order: Orders between 9 am and 5 pm between Monday and Saturday. All orders can be placed via Uber Eats, Mr D Food or directly on 079 476 3648.
MEXI-BOWLS, BURRITOS AND NACHOS
Tortilla Modern Mexican, from their pop up shop at the Mojo Market to their mobile food truck, is a regular choice for locals. Pick between their popular chicken, veg or beef burritos, their 2-for-1 taco or make your own burrito, nacho or mexi bowl from a host of toppings and sides.
Delivery areas: Southern and Northern suburbs
How to order: Through Uber Eats or Mr D Foods via the Tortilla Modern Mexican website.
YOU WON’T HAVE TO MOVE A MUSSEL
The Mussel Monger and Oyster Bar are at Route 44 market in Stellenbosch and Mojo Market in Cape Town, among many markets. Some go to markets just for this vendor alone, because they serve freshly harvested mussels and oysters. During lockdown, the Mussel Monger and Oyster Bar are offering home deliveries straight from their Saldanha farms to your door.
Delivery areas: Durbanville & northern suburbs, Stellenbosch, Blouberg, Milnerton, Atlantic Seaboard, Cape Town City Center, southern suburbs.
How to order: Deliveries in the Northern and Stellenbosch must be placed on Thursdays between 10 am and 5 pm. Deliveries for all other areas on Fridays between 10 am and 5 pm.
ARTS AND CRAFTS ONLY MADE IN AFRICA
A great thing about markets is that they support local and creative work, which can be a real gem to discover. The Bay Harbour Market, in particular, is a base for designers and fashion enthusiasts. One of those vendors, Africa Made Only is delivering their locally designed and tailored clothing range. It includes everything from women’s lounge shorts and T-shirts to face masks and men’s hoodies.
Delivery areas: Deliver countrywide
How to order: All orders can be made via the Africa Made Only Website
INDIVIDUALLY CRAFTED LAMPS
Imvelo crafts from the Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay and the Lourensford Market in Somerset West are still crafting the individually handmade lamps and candle holders they’ve become so popularly known for. Each lamp is made from recyclable materials and is customised to each buyer’s specifications from individualised designs to the colour, patterns and materials.
Delivery areas: Northern suburbs
How to order: Order’s can be made via the Imvelo website.
BUCKS AND FLOWERS
Bokke and Blomme is a classically South African vendor that is a staple at many markets, from the Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay and the Hermanus Country Market to the CY Market in Durbanville and the V&A Watershed. All of their quirky and uniquely South African design collections of wooden words and slogans, wooden flowers, games and office equipment is available for delivery.
Delivery areas: Deliver countrywide
How to order: Orders can be made via the Bokke and Blomme website.
EVERY DETAIL COUNTS
The upmarket and trendy interior design store, Abode had a permanent spot in the heart of the market at Old Biscuit Mill. Abode products are now available for delivery on all store products, from Africa Reinvented wall art and a shweshwe tyre clocks to delicate wire art and custom furniture designs.
Delivery areas: Delivers countrywide
How to order: Via Facebook or Instagram or on 072 261 3540.
