Everything seems to be better topless, the Fiat 500 and a Cape Town holiday both being no exception.

As could be expected then, the Fiat 500 Cabriolet is a saucier, slicker decapitated version of its aforementioned cousin, a hugely popular design inspired by a classic that has been on our roads for over 50 years.  On par with first kisses, skimming rocks on azure waters and warm soup on a cold day, this oh-so-cute convertible – it’s one of the cheapest you can hire - is a feel-good ride, and skipping through the streets of the Mother City in this zippy, little number with the roof down and the music up is pure and simply fun on wheels.

Available at a very affordable self-drive rate, the Fiat 500 Convertible has to be one of the best hire cars for touring the city’s compact streets, the Cape Winelands or many of Cape Town’s spectacular beaches. Even though it appears rather diminutive from the outside, the retro drop-top is spacious inside, easily accommodating four adults.

Similarly, the 1.4-litre petrol engine is surprisingly powerful. Smooth and happy to rev, it behaves like it drinks only fine Italian espresso. There’s also a button which engages Sport mode. In many cars, this does practically nothing, but in the Fiat 500 C, it triggers another personality. At the flip of a switch, it’s as if you’ve been transported into a sharp, little race car.

The convertible roof has three positions, so even if the weather is not optimal, you can choose an angle to suit the level of sunshine. In full convertible mode, all passengers are exposed to South Africa’s famous bright blue skies, which look even better when viewed through the leaves of palm trees as you cruise past Camps Bay beach.
