Level 1 travel: UK, Israel and more countries ban travel from South Africa amid new variant discovery

The United Kingdom (UK) has added South Africa on its travel red list after South African scientists reported a new Covid-19 variant, B.1.1.529, according to a statement released by the UK government.

This list also includes Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

UK FIRST TO BAN TRAVEL FROM SOUTH AFRICA

Flights from South Africa will be banned from 2pm on Friday 26 November until hotel quarantine is “up and running” from 4am on Sunday 28 November, added the statement.

“We are taking precautionary action to protect public health and the progress of our vaccine rollout at a critical moment as we enter winter, and we are monitoring the situation closely,” said UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Sajid Javid.

Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) Minister Naledi Pandor said that the travel ban “seems to have been rushed”. 

 

ISRAEL, EU ADD SA ON TRAVEL RED LIST

Israel, Singapore and the European Union are have also imposed restrictions on travel into the EU from southern Africa.
