Garden Route Game Lodge Acquires New Giraffe

The Garden Route Game Lodge near Cape Town has acquired a new giraffe and welcomed it into the Game Reserve

Here’s how to experience the hidden treasures of Knysna.

On the 10th of October a new giraffe bull (Giraffa camelopardalis) arrived at the Garden Route Game Lodge, close to Cape Town (at the start of the Garden Route). The giraffe was captured at a nearby game reserve under the supervision of wildlife veterinarian Dr. Johan Kriek and transported to the Garden Route Game Lodge in a specially modified field recovery trailer.

Due to the size of the animal, giraffe capture is a complicated exercise and the requires the co-ordinated effort of a well trained capture team. Giraffe are usually darted from a helicopter and then "walked" into the recovery crate using a series of ropes and harnesses.

To reduce stress during transport and loading the ears are blocked with cotton wool and the animal is blindfolded. Upon arrival at the Garden Route Game Lodge the restraints were removed and the giraffe calmly walked off the trailer into his new home. The Garden Route Game Lodge offers both day safari game drives and overnight safaris.
