Ajax Cape Town Wins Old Mutual Mangaung Cup
New Cup added to Ajax Cape Town's accomplishments!
Ajax Cape Town collected their first piece of silverware ahead of the 2007/08 Castle Premiership season when they beat Free State Stars 2-0 in the final of the inaugural Old Mutual Mangaung Cup played at Bloemfontein's Vodacom Park on Sunday 29 July 2007.The 'Urban Warriors' overcame a tough challenge from fellow Castle Premiership campaigners Moroka Swallows in the first match of the tournament, in a game that had to be decided on penalties with Ajax players Brett Evans, Eyong Enoh, Franklyn Cale and Tembinkosi 'Tera' Fanteni all converting their spot-kicks.
Goalkeeper Hans Vonk saved two penalties to book the 'Urban Warriors' a spot in the final against Stars, who beat neighbours Bloemfontein Celtic 4-2 on penalties on their road to the last game.
In the final, youngster Clinton Emmanuel - who came on for Fanteni in the second half - opened the scoring in the 70th minute with a well-taken header from a Shameeg Doutie corner-kick.
Fourteen minutes later, Andile Mbenyane converted with his head from another Doutie set-piece, to double the lead.
The 'Urban Warriors' could have gone three goals up but Daylon Claasen's effort was disallowed for offside.
But the two goals proved enough for Ajax to be crowned inaugural champions of the Old Mutual-sponsored pre-season tournament.
