MANAGING EDITOR ROLE 

Mission of the role

To build, lead, hire and coach a team into a high-performing, digital-first content team that delivers resonant, high-quality storytelling that drives measurable audience and partner impact. Then it becomes what we aspire to and stand for: Storymaking. 

You are the committed anchor and passionate driver of CapeTownMagazine.com’s content engine, creating clarity, momentum, and accountability across the team. You don’t just commission, edit, and manage content; you help them ensure it performs, evolves, and contributes meaningfully to the business.

You are comfortable working with KPIs and performance metrics and use them to support, guide, and grow the team. You are excited to coach for performance, helping each team member understand what great looks like, where they are in their journey, and how to stretch into their potential.

You act as the integrator between content and the partner team, translating business priorities into clear editorial direction and ensuring that what the team produces is strategically relevant.

    • Discovery channels such as Google & ChatGPT

  • The team produces content that is both well-written and digitally resonant

2. Performance-coached, energised content team

  • Consistent delivery of high-quality content, on time and to standard

  • Clear and enthusiastic ownership across all team members and projects

3. Structured, scalable content engine

  • KPI-tracking performance-based coaching embedded into the operating rhythm 

  • Weekly, monthly and quarterly planning and execution rhythms across the team

  • Workload is prioritised based on impact and business priorities

  • Team capacity and delivery are visible through systems (e.g. Monday.com)

  • Effective leveraging of freelancers and contributors to unlock capacity and quality

  • Continuous improvement of systems, workflows, and output for team effectiveness

4. Alignment between the content and the partner team

  • Business and partner needs are translated into clear, actionable editorial direction

  • Content output supports editorial, partner success & strategic campaigns

  • A healthy, collaborative relationship between content and partner teams

  • Content team with clear context for work that is business-relevant

Key competencies (what you bring)

  • Proven experience writing and editing digital content to a high standard

  • Strong track record in planning and managing workflows (using a planning tool)

  • Experience coaching or managing people, with exposure to KPIs & performance tracking

  • Strong ownership mindset and takes responsibility for output, team, and results

  • Clear drive and grit shown through momentum in your career 

  • Adaptable and flexible. Able to hold strong standards while remaining open to change, feedback, and new ways of working and unlearning

Advantageous (nice to have)

  • Experience using Monday.com (or similar tools)

  • Strong content judgment and instinct for what resonates

  • Exposure to analytics and content performance metrics

  • Experience working across multi-channel content (web + social)

  • Naturally collaborative and able to work across teams

To drive the growth, energy, and evolution of CapeTownMagazine.com’s content by generating, shaping, and executing ideas that resonate deeply with audiences and perform across digital platforms, while inspiring the team through action and creative momentum.

You are the ideas and growth engine of the content team - constantly identifying opportunities, formats, and executing on stories - copy, video and any channel - that can unlock audience engagement, reach, and relevance into a broader space through curiosity.

You live in the digital world and dream through execution when you’re in the real world - understanding what people are watching, sharing, saving, and responding to - and translate that into clear, executable content ideas that hit home.

You don’t just come up with smart ideas; you drive them to life. You move quickly from concept to execution, working hands-on and alongside the team and contributors to make things happen.

You inspire and grow the team through doing, pulling people into projects, showing new ways of working, and building confidence through shared execution and experimentation, rather than formal coaching.

You play a key role in shaping the future of CapeTownMagazine.com by helping us evolve how we tell stories, how we show up on platforms, and how we grow our audience.

2. Content that resonates across formats and platforms

  • Deliver (create, commission, edit) high-quality storytelling, resonant content across formats, including:

    • Features

    • Social content (e.g. reels, posts)

    • Campaign content

  • Commission and brief the internal team, freelancers, and contributors to produce content

  • Ensure all content - whether created or commissioned - is clear, engaging, and aligned with CapeTownMagazine.com’s standards and audience expectations

  • Shape and refine content hooks so that they are ready for final editorial polish by the Managing Editor. Think in: Titles tags. Angles. Post copy. Calls to action.

3. Growing pillars for locals to love and live by 

  • Take ownership of key CapeTownMagazine.com content pillars across a wide variety of channels, including:

    • Communities: IG Weekend Takeover programme, Consumer Newsletter

    • Editorial pillars 

  • Drive the growth, relevance, and performance of these (and new) pillars over time

  • Continuously evolve these pillars by:

    • Improving formats

    • Strengthening content angles

    • Increasing audience engagement and reach

  • Ensure each pillar:

    • Thrives with clear content direction

    • Can rely on smart and consistent output

    • Sees growth through strong visible resonance with the target audience

4. Ideas consistently move from concept to execution through clear content planning

  • Distil ideas (your own and others’) into clear, structured, and actionable content plans

  • Balance long-term planning with fast, reactive content opportunities

  • Pitch content plans for sign-off and drive them into execution across the team

  • Ensure ideas move efficiently from concept to published content

  • Maintain a strong pipeline of content ideas across different seasons

5. Brand campaigns and special projects that land and create impact

  • Co-lead in ideation and execution of brand and editorial campaigns

  • Develop strong, audience-first campaign ideas that align with editorial and partner goals

  • Execute campaigns through a combination of:

    • Direct creation

    • Commissioning contributors

    • Coordinating internal team members

  • Drive campaigns (alongside Managing Editor) from concept through to delivery

  • Adapt the execution approach based on the needs of each campaign

  • Track metrics and adjust for performance

6. A team energised through your creative momentum and collaboration

  • Work closely with the Managing Editor to align ideas with execution, ensuring strong collaboration between creative direction and delivery

  • Act as a strong creative partner to the Managing Editor, stepping in to take ownership of content execution when required

  • Bring consistent energy, curiosity, and creative momentum into the team through strong, actionable ideas

  • Anchor the team by translating ideas into clear direction and executable content plans

  • Lead from the front by showing how ideas move from concept to execution

  • Help create a culture of experimentation, speed, and continuous improvement

  • Raise the bar for creative output by consistently pushing for stronger, more resonant ideas

CONTENT INTERN

This is a role for a social media-savvy person who thrives on structure and detail. The idea of creating content that reaches 278 000+ followers on Instagram excites you, and you understand that a big part of that impact comes from consistency, accuracy, and strong systems. 

While you’re excited by content, you’re just as comfortable working behind the scenes; planning, organising, uploading, and making sure everything runs smoothly. 

You also have strong English writing skills and a natural feel for storytelling, and you’re excited to keep improving. You’ve already tried your hand at writing or storytelling (on any platform) and want to develop those skills further. 

We know AI is part of the process; but your originality, voice, and thinking matter most. We care about how you make the work your own.

You’re also immersed in Cape Town culture and always up for exploring what the province has to offer.

What the role actually looks like:

  • 60% content coordination & admin: Uploading articles, scheduling posts, formatting content, sourcing visuals, and managing our communities 

  • 20% writing: Writing features, overviews and captions

  • 20% video content creation: Creating Reels/TikToks, capturing content when needed, and pitching ideas 

Responsibilities: 

  • Create, edit and schedule social media posts to curate our feeds 

  • Community management

  • Learn and master our content management and production systems

  • Create Reels and TikToks

  • Learn and incorporate Google ranking/SEO strategies

  • Write features and overviews 

  • Research, fact-check and update old features and overviews 

  • Take part in content planning and pitch new ideas 

  • Assist with feedback reports (capturing stats)

Duration: 6 months, with the chance for a permanent position. Dependent on performance. 

Stipend: R5 000 per month.
