Trains to and from Khayelitsha restored

Metrorail confirms service is operating in Cape Town

Last Update 29 March 2017

The train services to and from Khayelitsha in Cape Town are reported to be fully operational since Sunday 26 March 2017. Metrorail expressed their gratitude to the communities for their “willingness and co-operation” during the process of it restoring the train service.

The restoration period was necessary due to a joint operation to remove illegal electrical connections between Nolungile and Nonkqubela. The decision to terminate the service to the area was made to protect commuters, assets belonging to the railway and employees and it was decided to withhold services until the situation stabilised.

Metrorail regional manager Richard Walker stated that there would be further discussions between the community, Metrorail and other role players in a concerted attempt to reach a more sustainable solution to the electrical issues.
