An innovative Cape Town educational facility for children
Last Updated: 28 October 2016
On 27 October 2016, the City of Cape Town’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate opened the Nantes Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) for children in Athlone.
Kitted out with educational materials and toys ideal for little ones, the centre can accommodate more than 100 children and includes three classrooms for three- to four-year-olds and two classrooms for four- to five-year-olds as well as a baby area, a sick bay, a staff room, ablutions, a kitchen area and a store-room. Outside there are also two play areas, a food garden, a recycling area as well as a safe collection and drop-off zone for parents.
The main objective of the space is to provide an opportunity for more children to access registered ECD centres, which are compliant with health and safety requirements and meet the educational development needs of a child. Through these centres the Mother City strives to contribute towards the development of a firm educational foundation for children who enter the formal schooling system.
What’s more, the city, appointed ECD operator (the Bridges Play Centre), and non-governmental organisation Early Learning Years, are already in discussions around establishing a toy library at the facility in the near future.
“As a caring city, our aim is to create a stimulating learning environment that will assist with each child’s holistic development. The Nantes ECD will provide a healthy and safe learning environment,” concludes the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Social Development and Early Childhood Development, Councillor Suzette Little.
