This year's edition is actually the second ever Naked Word Festival to come to Cape Town, but it is still a very unique and special event that any true art appreciator needs to attend. From Thursday, 8 to Sunday, 11 June 2017, the Theatre Arts Admin Collective in Observatory will be overrun by arts events of the word variety; poetry and spoken word performances.
The festival draws crowds of poets and appreciators of good literature from all over the country; both as performers and as audience members. The great thing about the Cape Town arts scene is the ability to commend the work of others; we are the home of some truly amazing creativity and what better way to appreciate it than the Naked Word Festival? The theme of this, the second ever edition, is “I Speak of my Inherit Age”, so interpret that however you want.

One of the main festival organizers, Mbongeni Nomkonwana, said the following about the African-centralized theme - “history has displaced many South Africans, culturally and physically. We want to place ourselves culturally, but that demands a re-shape of our understanding of ‘culture’. We are acknowledging that many stories and histories dissipated during colonisation and the new South African dispensation. We are redefining culture as generational, and we are employing live poetry, music and dialogue to do this”.
The Naked Word Festival is presented by Lingua Franca Poetry; a spoken poetry collective that was created in the Mother City!
